Questions & Answers

Can you use this on travertine for a spot repair?
ByJun 11, 2024

Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Joy. While Rust-Oleum OKON W-1 Water Repellent Sealer provides a water repelling barrier to stone surfaces, it is intended for denser surfaces and travertine can be very porous. Instead, we recommend applying our OKON W-2 Water Repellent Sealer as it provides the same performance for more porous surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-OKON-5-gal-Water-Repellent-Sealer-for-Porous-Concrete-and-Masonry-OK920/204314361 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

I want to coat a concrete driveway. The driveway hasn't been sealed in 3 years. 1) will this product work for that? 2) can I use a roller to coat? I don't have a sprayer.

    Answer This Question

Thanks for reaching out. Zinsser Okon W-1 Water Repellent Sealer is for use on vertical surfaces, such as cast concrete, tilt-up panels, unglazed brick, etc. Okon W-1 cannot be applied to a concrete driveway, it is not formulated to withstand vehicle traffic. Rust-Oleum Seal-Krete Clear-Seal Concrete Sealer can be applied to bare concrete, or concrete that has been coated with 1-part water based coating. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Seal-Krete-1-gal-Gloss-Clear-Seal-Concrete-Protective-Sealer-606001/203002730 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

In the past I’ve used Okon2 on my outside adobe wells. I see someone said Okon1 could be also used. Okon1 is a lot less expensive than Okon2. Which one will last longer?

      Answer This Question

We're happy to help, Jim. Yes, our Okon W-1 Repellant Sealer can be used on adobe walls as it is ideal for sealing dense surfaces like an adobe wall. Both W-1 and W-2 Sealers provide a long-lasting finish but W-1 will provide the better finish for denser surfaces. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

        Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out! Rust-Oleum Okon W-1 Water Repellent Sealer is intended for use on vertical surfaces. Instead, Rust-Oleum Okon Multi-Surface Water Repellent Sealer may be a better choice as it can go on walkways and be painted over. Please keep in mind, both of these products need to be applied to bare surfaces and are not recommend for use on surfaces that already have paint on them. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-OKON-5-gal-Acrylic-Multi-Surface-Water-Repellent-Clear-Sealer-OK930/204643811 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Can this product (OKON W-1) be used on cement roof tiles? My roof has lots of black molds and green mildews/algae due to water absorption/retention from the old cement tiles which create a perfect environment for those parasites to strive. I am thinking to coat my roof with this product after I pressure wash it. Will it work for my application? Thanks, Duke

                  Answer This Question

Great question, Duke! Our Okon W-1 Water Repellent Sealer can be used to seal cement roof tiles and prevent mold and mildew from growing on the surface. We recommend using a mold and mildew killer while pressure washing to kill and remove the mold from the surface prior to applying the Okon W-1 to the surface.

This works for surface areas, but for cracks and areas where the floors meet the wall, using hydraulic cement is really the best choice in that situation. You can use both to give yourself a better moisture barrier. Joseph

Hi Sher! Okon W1 will not work as well for your application. Instead, you'll want to consider using Zinsser Watertite Mold and Mildew Proof Paint. This is a unique oil-base formula that combines a waterproofing resin with Portland cement to create a coating that stops up to 34 lbs psi of water pressure. It also contains a mildewcide to prevent the growth of mold and mildew for a minimum of five years after application. We recommend two coats to properly perform. Excellent product! I used a hand pump sprayer of I gallon capacity and it worked well. It would have gone faster with a power spray, but is not necessary. Most of the work involved cleaning and preparing the surface. My application was made to a concrete driveway only 2 months old. Amazing how many small areas involving some sort of dirt or debris develop in that short time. The finished job looks great and I plan to use on an annual basis to preserve the surface. Highly recommend.

                      Rough adobe no problem
I just used this on about 400 sq ft of adobe block wall on my backyard project and will use more soon. My self-made blocks and mud-grout joints are cracked and highly imperfect, but I brushed the w-1 on with a large paint brush and it came out great. I gave extra attention to the grout. The only surprise I got was how much darker my blocks got. Some of the poorer quality blocks that came from dirt lower than 4 feet down are whitish, and those were unaffected, but the brown ones turned quite a bit darker. I used red and dark brown concrete dye in some of the blocks for aesthetic purposes, and the rusty-reds came out much brighter. I like it. No dust at all comes off on my hand. One small section of interior wall got a second coat and that came out great-- feels like a finished brick. The second coat requires only a fraction of the amount of W-1 than the first one. I threw a little water on one coat, and the water beaded up nicely. My only concern is with the vapor permeability, but the online experts say this permeable-- I hope it stays that way with a second coat. I did this in Phoenix-- about 102 degrees and 10-15% humidity. I did not wet my bricks before-hand. Came out fine. I started at top and went down 1 or 2 rows at a time. Brushed out runs and drips on lower blocks as I spilled. Used about 3 of the 5 gallons so far. Very happy with it. Very worth it. After all, I'm gonna' live in this thing.
