Does this work on automotive plastic trim?

Asked by: Matrix
I tried it, and even in dry Texas heat, it remained tacky for days. I ended up sanding it off and using Krylon with much better results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from One touch and it's gone I have a old file cabinet I got at a yard sale and I was hoping I could fix it up. I sanded the entire outside with a power-sander and then cleaned it. After I spray-painted it, it looked pretty good. It wasn't quite the "chrome" finish like it said it would be, but it was a nice metallic and fairly shiny. Unfortunately, even after letting it dry in a well ventilated area for 2 days, as soon as I touched it, even just a light tap with my fingertip, the shiny part smudged. I thought "maybe my hands are just oily or dirty or something and it's just a finger print smudge." But it wasn't. It has been a week since I moved it into my room and there are a few areas around the handles that are almost completely bare of the paint. I haven't even tried to dust it with a rag yet since I'm sure it will look even worse. I'll be getting this thing powder-coated as soon as I can.

I used this first to paint a few parts. even after days in high heat, low humidity in Texas the parts were tacky. I couldn't touch them without leaving finger prints stuck in the paint. I thought maybe I put it on too thick. I sanded back to nothing and started over only applying fog coats waiting a whole day in between coats. By the time the parts were sufficiently coated and "dry" I had the same tacky results. Then I thought, well I have some Rust-oleum clear coat, maybe that will harden enought to protect it. The second I sprayed the clear coat on the silver turned to a light gray, it dint even look metallic. I tossed the can in the trash, bought Krylon's version of the same paint and the results were night and day. I've had similar experience recently with other rust-oleum paints. The moral of the story is don't buy this, quite possibly don't buy any rust-oleum products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unexpected performance What the rustoleum rep on here basically said is, if you do anything other then look at it, its done. I honestly cannot recommend this for anything either. I did use it on some light fixtures that wont be touched and its standing up ok, anything moving, gets touched or automotive is an absolute no. The can does say "clearcoat not recommended" and I have to agree with the can. 3 days dry time, sprayed on clear and it was like the "chrome" or "bright silver" (its chrome come on) melted. Yeah, it was like the chrome part of the paint was melting. I have spent 10 days and about 7 cans of this and 4 cans of clear trying everything to produce a serviceable product. Cannot wet sand, cannot brush against, cannot leave exposed to elements, cannot breath on... Finally ended with a kind of satiny silver finish. The drying time of 20 to 120 minutes is way way off. Granted is was kind of humid, not unreasonably so, maybe 80%, or less and after 2 full days the finish was still "tacky" and would leave fingerprint mark impressions. Not "wear off" actual impressions, deep valleys and ridges that took a bit of sanding to get to the bottom of. Applying the product is difficult. You need to do it in one coat, one pass, if you don't there will be clearly visible differences as the "leafing" gets disbursed irregularly. KEEP THAT CAN SHAKEN Saying that it is "protective enamel" gives the impression that given it is going to put a protective enamel finish on whatever you are doing, a hard, durable, enamel finish, that is chrome, like the name and the cap imply. really though this is more then misleading, it is a blatant lie and falsely represents the actual finish you will end with. Get some 800-1200 grit sand paper and some buffing wheels, take the time to make shiny whatever you want to shine, this will not do it for you.

I've sprayed it over gloss black base coats to amazing results. One thick coat, with over a week to dry, and it felt nice and smooth to the touch..... momentarily. It fingerprinted within moments, so I decided to be a little rougher, and all of the chrome rubbed off in about 60 seconds. This stuff does NOT respond well to friction or body heat, even after it's supposed to be 'cured.' There is no way to clear coat it (even alclad lacquers dull it to grey, I haven't tried resin yet). However if this is for a photo frame or something you won't touch very often? It looks awesome. Looks like metal.... until you touch it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the greatest chrome spray paint known to man Rustoleum chrome paint is the finest, most durable, and reflective chrome paint on the market. I was compelled to write this review because of the other charlatans leaving one star for this fine product. If you have no idea how to use spray paint, if you do not understand its nature or the fundamentals of metallic paint in general- please dont take out your frustrations on this fine brand and paint color. I have applied this to rusted metal, raw cement, raw wood, bricks, essentially every surface known to man and it has never let me down. Tips for the wise, use rustoleum with rustoleum because this is an oil based paint. Other paints cant handle this sort of greatness. If you ever wanted to paint with the Gods, this is the most trusted american brand for almost a century. First there was the wheel, then the plow, but the greatest landmark achievement of man was in 1921 when Rustoleum was invented. Most likely it was born before your time and will be around after well after. Respect the rusto because you only exist in its shadow of excellence.

Although the cap does have a chrome finish, do not expect the same results. A shiny greyish silver at best. The can does say metallic and I guess it is technically correct, although metallic covers a broad spectrum of metals. Rustoleum, please remove the chrome cap for a better representation.
