Good question, Rick! For the best adhesion to bare aluminum, prime the surface with Rust-Oleum Professional Aluminum Primer before spraying with the Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Professional-15-oz-Flat-White-Interior-Exterior-Aluminum-Primer-Spray-254170/202531910 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 15

Which spray should I purchase that the wood does not need to be sanded or primed?
      ByJan 15, 2025
      1 Answer |
      Answer This Question

Happy to help! Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint can be applied directly to a wooden surface without sanding or priming. While not necessary, it is recommended to lightly scuff the surface with 220-grit sandpaper to help create a texture that provides the best adhesion. If no primer is applied, depending on how porous the wood is, it may require additional coats. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

Our front door has 70 year old brass parts, interior and exterior similar to photo. Is this a good product to match currently available Matte Black interior/exterior door pulls/knobs and hinges? If not, what should I use?

        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Great question! Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint will provide a non-gloss black finish; please note though that it will also reflect a textured finish that resembles hammered metal. If you are looking for a smooth matte black finish, we would recommend Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Spray Paint. To ensure the paint matches your look, we would encourage testing a small area on the hinge and doorknob. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-Oz-Matte-Black-Ultra-Cover-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-331182/326635224 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 10

          Answer This Question

Great question, Donny. While Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint provides a durable finish for outdoor metal surfaces, it can not be applied to a truck side step. The foot traffic will cause the paint to crack and peel over time. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

What is the best roller cover to back roll this paint after it applied for overspray purposes?
            ByOct 2, 2024
            1 Answer |
            Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Mike. We do not recommend over-spraying Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint and back rolling. If using the aerosol version of this paint we recommend applying multiple light coats to help build the finish and hammered look. Please also note, our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Paint is also available in a brush-on version. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-1-qt-Silver-Hammered-Gloss-Rust-Preventive-Interior-Exterior-Paint-7213502/100670385 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Can this be applied to bathroom fixtures? And, is an acrylic or enamel based paint?
              BySep 2, 2024
              1 Answer |
              Answer This Question

Thank you for reaching out, Susan. While Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint can be applied to metal surfaces, we do not recommend applying to any bathroom fixtures. This exposure to water will cause the paint to blister and peel. -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

                Answer This Question

Happy to help. Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Hammered Spray Paint can withstand temperatures up to 200° F, therefore we do not recommend applying to an engine. Instead, we recommend our Rust-Oleum Automotive Engine Enamel as it provides a chemical resistant coating that can't withstand up to 500° F. Please note however, this product does not have the same hammered finish that you were looking for. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Automotive-11-oz-Semi-Gloss-Aluminum-Engine-Enamel-Spray-Paint-6-Pack-248949/204622225 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

Galvanized or Galv-Alum finish matches near exact
I purchased this to re-spray the chimney stack while the new chimney cap was being made. I chose this "Hammered Silver" finish because it was the closest I could find to a "Galvanized" or "Galv-Alum" finish - it w 100% accurate, spot-on. I first pressure washed the chimney stack, then took a nylon brush to it, cleaned it with Acetone, then gave it 3 coats of paint. Exceptional - unbeatable.

                    No spray top
I have bought the hammered products by Rust-oleum before and love the results. However, I bought a can that didn’t have a spray top on it. This is the second time. Open the top before you buy a can so it doesn’t happen to you.

                      Color is not black
Two years ago I bought this and painted a milk can. It was perfect! Bought another can this week to paint floor registers and it is not matte black, rather, a dark metallic silver.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Please keep in mind that the number of coats and the type of surface you are applying Rust-Oleum Universal Hammered Spray Paint to can affect the finished color of the product. Additionally, it is not only important to shake the can in the beginning but throughout the application. This ensures any settled pigment is continually mixed in. Give this a try, and if you still have trouble, feel free to reach us at 800-481-4785.

                        Hammered Gray
After many trials and errors, what I learned is the trick to using this paint is to use it in one continual thick stroke with at a least 60 percent overlapped. You would go a little closer than usual compared to using a regular spray can to get the hammered effect. Keep note, if you go back over it, you would end up with a solid gray color with divots that have no color variations in the metallic paint. When you're done, do not touch your project for al least a week to let it cure. With that said, it's someone tougher than regular paint.

Although it does have texture, the glossy finish does bring out imperfections. It also the coverage was not very good.

I used it to paint four alloy wheels for my car, and it covered well with the first coat. There is plenty left over for touch-ups. The wheels went on the car later that day and they look great.

By far the easiest to apply rattle can paint I've ever used. It went on even with no drips, dried quickly, but not too quickly, and took the second coat perfectly. The hammered finish looks nicer than I imagined.

Decent product but small nozzle drips
I bought a used rusty chandeliers that I knew I could scrub up and use Rustoleum spray paint on, and after research decided that the Hammered was best to cover up imperfections. I chose Dark Bronze, I hope it helps anyone looking at this color and type of coverage. It has a slight gray tint, which is okay. The can seems to drip when you turned it at a slight angle and the nozzle is tiny. Wear gloves! I recommend this product.
