Q:Can this be used on ceramic tile in bathroom?
by|Jun 20, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Happy to help! While Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer Spray will adhere to ceramic, we do not recommend it for use on tile in a shower/tub enclosure, in a sink, or on a floor. This type of use will cause the primer, and any topcoat over it, to peel. Since this is an aerosol product, it must be applied outdoors or in a space with proper ventilation, such as an open garage. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:I have a patio set made of some cast metal (aluminum?) with a flaking, powder coated finish. After scraping the loose paint will this product help keep the remaining from flaking? Best for topcoat? Thanks!

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Joe. Our Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer is ideal for priming difficult-to-paint surfaces, like a powder coated metal. We would recommend top coating using Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel as it provides a rust preventative durable finish for metal surfaces. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-12-oz-Protective-Enamel-Flat-Black-Spray-Paint-7776830/100670370 -Rust-Oleum Product Support 14

          Flocking or runs, who knows?
It doesn't spray evenly. It comes out really fast, and either results in chunky flocking OR results in instant running. Painting on an 80 degree day with 50% humidity, it almost couldn't be more ideal. No amount of shaking helps. Now I have to sand down my entire project and start from scratch. Some areas just flake off within minutes. Others just stay tacky forever. Do not recommend.

That's not what we expect to hear! It sounds like you're experiencing dry spray with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer Spray. This is when the product dries before it hits the surface of your project. This occurs most often when users hold the can too far from the surface when spraying - our recommendation is 10-16" from the surface. Effects of dry spray can also happen when temperatures are too high or too low. You can try using a lint free rag, slightly damp, and gently wipe the surface to remove the dusting. If it's still rough after doing that, you'll want to sand the surface with a 180 or 220 grit sandpaper and make sure it's clean and dry before recoating. If needing further assistance, please give us a call at (800) 481-4785 to talk with us.

Nasty stuff but really works! Reglazed an old plastic mobile home tub and surround using this stuff under the epoxy. Two coats of primer and two coats of epoxy made the tub and surround look brand new. Plan to do the walk in fiberglas shower and surround next. This is really nasty stuff to work with and you will need a gas mask, goggles, and plenty of ventilation. Once the primer kicks the smell decreases, same with the epoxy layers. Plan on leaving the room ventilated and unoccupied for at least 24 hours after each coat.

Let's talk through this, Mike! The reason online products are sold by the case is for shipping purposes. In many instances, including this one with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer Spray, items must be shipped by case quantities. For this reason, when purchasing items online, they must be purchased in this way. For individual cans, we recommend visiting your local Home Depot store to see if they have the product in stock. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

This stuff smells to high heaven and that smell will persist. In addition, with only a little spraying it will turn my tongue numb and gave me a headache. I have sprayed all kinds of paint and this one stands heads and shoulders above any as far as odor. I had on a good quality dust mask in a well ventilated area inside but seriously, that wasn't remotely enough. I am seriously concerned about the toxicity of this product. If you must spray it, I would highly recommend having on an automotive spray mask and be in a highly ventilated area using a fan or something of that nature to create negative pressure. As to it's performance, I sprayed it on laminate and it sticks like glue. It's drippy so you have to be careful to just put several very light dusting coats on vertical surfaces. However, I will never again use it inside. In fact, for the reasons stated above, I am never going to use it again.

Let's talk through this! Please keep in mind that the odor of Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Universal Bonding Primer can depend on one's sense of smell. However, once the product cures in 7 to 10 days, there will be no odor. We also strongly recommend spraying paint in a well-ventilated area. When applying the product, make sure to hold it 10 to 16 inches from the surface and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke to ensure an even finish. We want to hear more about your experience and try to make things right with you. Please feel free to call us at 800-481-4785 to talk about this more and make sure to have the product handy! - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5 Rustoleum

Best Primer I have found yet!
I have tried many different primers over the years but this one beats them all. I mainly use it for sealing melamine shelving to make prospecting miller tables. It is the only thing that I have found that will stick to the melamine. It will also stick to pvc and other types of plastics so that you can paint it with other types of paint. If you have a surface that is hard to paint, try this on it first and then apply your finish paint. It is waterproof and has a very tough scuff proof surface. This is way better and tougher than the automotive primers and I use it on any metal objects I want to paint first.
