Questions & Answers

What hardwood and softwood pilot hole sizes should I use for the SPAX Model # 4571820122547, 1/2 in. x 10 in. Powerlag Hex Drive Washer Head High Corrosion Resistant Coating Lag Screw. I'm planning to secure pressure treated pine to white oak railroad ties.
Asked by: Doug
To be specific, the ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-1782 says, "Lead holes having diameters of 0.175 inch (4.45 mm) and 0.200 inch (5.08 mm) are required for the 3/8 inch series and 1/2 inch series fasteners, respectively, to reduce splitting of the wood ..." So, the closest common bit size to 0.200 inches (for a 1/2" Powerlag pilot hole) is 13/64 inch (ergo, 0.203125 diameter) and not 1/4" (0.250 diameter). Especially in soft wood, therefore, I am just using the slightly smaller and more commonly available 3/16" bit (0.1875 diameter) in a pressure-treated SYP 2x12. For hardwood: Since the minor thread diameter of the 1/2" Powerlag is listed as 0.295, in hardwood I would probably just go with the 1/4" in say Oak or Ash. I doubt anyone is going to be using a Powerlag in anything harder than that but; if so, you could go all the way to 9/32" (0.28125 dia.) or even 19/64" (0.296875 dia.) for say Hickory or anything harder depending on the thread engagement (keeping in mind that the shank diameter is listed as 0.335 inches in diameter). - Hope that helps! https://spax.us/uploads/resources/ICC-ES_Report_ESR-1782.pdf
