Questions & Answers

Can these be use for siding installation?
ByNov 7, 2024
1 Answer |
Answer This Question

Yes, SPAX exterior screws can be used for siding installation, especially when they’re rated for outdoor use and treated lumber, which is common in siding projects. For siding, it's important to use screws with corrosion-resistant coatings, like SPAX HCR (High Corrosion Resistant) or stainless steel options, to ensure durability and longevity in outdoor conditions. The type of screw and its length should match the siding material thickness and substrate.

Can these be used to install new construction windows with a nailing flange on them
    ByOct 10, 2024
    1 Answer |
    Answer This Question

Thank you for your question! Yes, the 1.5" screw can work for this application, however, the more commonly recommended option is the SPAX #8 x 2" screw. This larger size offers improved thread engagement, which can provide better withdrawal performance overall.

Can these screws be used to hang vinyl shutters?
        ByOct 8, 2024
        1 Answer |
        Answer This Question

Yes, SPAX exterior wafer head screws are suitable for hanging vinyl shutters. However, there are a couple of important considerations: Mounting Surface: What material are you fastening the shutters into? SPAX fasteners are designed for multi-material use, including wood and masonry. If you're attaching the shutters to brick or concrete, please refer to the manufacturer's guidelines on our website for proper installation techniques and any additional requirements. Manufacturer's Instructions: We recommend following the shutter manufacturer's mounting instructions to ensure proper installation and compliance with their specifications. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please feel free to ask!

Any reason not to use these with painted redwood?
          ByAug 12, 2024
          1 Answer |
          Answer This Question

SPAX recommends using stainless-steel screws for projects with redwood. Here's why: Why Stainless-Steel Screws? Redwood, when exposed to outdoor elements for extended periods, is susceptible to tanning streaks if non-stainless-steel screws are used. Stainless-steel screws are recommended because they are resistant to corrosion and will not cause these unsightly streaks. What are Tanning Streaks? Tanning streaks occur when certain metals react with the natural tannins in redwood, especially under wet or humid conditions. This reaction can discolor the wood, leaving dark, streaky marks that detract from its natural beauty. How to Identify Stainless-Steel Screws To ensure you are using the correct screws for your redwood projects: Look for screws labeled specifically as stainless steel. Check for any industry markings or grades indicating stainless-steel composition. Benefits of Stainless-Steel Screws Resistance to Corrosion: Stainless steel does not rust, making it ideal for outdoor use. Durability: Maintains structural integrity over time, ensuring your projects last longer without degradation.

                  Absolute Over-Priced Junk
I have used hundreds of these, and the more I use them, the more I hate them. Literally ANYTHING made by GRK or Deckmate is better. I only bought these because I needed the short / durable / waferhead design. They are so incredibly awful. I have resorted to hammering them the first 1/4", otherwise they will literally give me an aneurism trying to drive them. Worst bit/screw head design imaginable. I hope this company bankrupts soon so someone else will fill the niche.

                  Response from SPAXApr 1, 2026
Thank you for the candid feedback. We’re sorry to hear these screws were so frustrating to use. That is not the experience we want with SPAX products. We appreciate you calling out the short, durable wafer-head design as the reason you chose them, and we take your comments seriously regarding drive performance and head engagement. Feedback like this is valuable to our team as we continue to evaluate product performance and user experience. Thank you for taking the time to share it. SPAX

Pretty good value, just know the limitations: cutting tip is terrible and the torx is nonstandard small T20
Good value, decent screw, I’d buy again (I already used 10,000 of them), just know their limitations. The torx head: Too bad the torx head is T20 not the normal T25 that you find on construction screws, so it's kind of annoying when you're also working with T25 screws as the same time because you need to switch bits. However, a T20 bit still works in a T25 screw, it's just kind of loose and you can't drive it insanely hard or it'll eventually slip. At least the supplied bits are long, rather than the short junk normally provided. However, they are not very good because they have a small circle at the end that's supposed to mate at the bottom of the T20 recess, but it just causes a shallow insertion depth and slippage. I ended up buying a pack of T20 bits. The screw strength: The screws are decently strong for their size, bit I did end up breaking a handful of them—I used about 10,000 of these to install fiber cement siding, and probably snapped around 10, so not bad. The screw tip: This totally annoyed me. The tip does not drill into material well, be it wood or fiber cement siding. The “cutting teeth,” which are the wiggly things on the screw flutes at the tip, don’t do anything at all. I wish these screws had a nice cutting tip like construction screws or most structural screws, e.g., the wedge cut-out at the tip. I ended up having to predrill every single screw when siding my barn—total pain, but I managed by carrying two drills on my tool belt, one with a drill bit (that I had to sharpen every 30 or so holes) and one with the T20 bit.

The #10 size is a great step up from #9 fasteners when assembling treated wood projects. Great coating, positive drive, and strong! Drill a 7/32” through-hole on your front board and run it into your back board with an impact driver (no pilot hole needed). The wafer head adds strength to the connection and looks great!
