How do you maintain and clean this unit, and do you have to eventually replace the medium balls?
Asked by: Jet
First the most important thing. You definitely change the media. Annually at a minimum. More often if the unit produces large quantities of condensate. Let me offer you some personal experience. And let me also add I do this for a living so I have no excuse for what I am about to tell you. I installed a neutralizing filter when I installed my high efficiency boiler because I know the condensate was acidic and could damage my drain lines. My boiler produces roughly 5 gallons of condensate a day, when running in the winter. After a year I checked the filter. Because there were still pellets in it, I figured I was good for a while longer. I assumed that they would disintegrate as they lost the effectiveness. I found out that is only partially true. A few months later the chrome p-trap under the sink where the condensate is pumped, started to leak. So I changed it. What I found inside shocked me. It was shiny brass as it someone had polished it. The condensate had eaten through the brass. Neutralizing is not a joke. Further if your drain lines are plastic don’t assume you are all set. To save money, for the next few years I would simply change the pellets in the cartridge as I had bucket filled with them from packages that had broken in the warehouse. Last month I was changing the media and found that the years of acid water had made the PVC so brittle that the casing had cracked. I was so shocked by this that I both changed the cartridge and now pump the neutralized condensate into a drywell rather than my septic tank. Bottom line is if you are dealing with condensate that is a byproduct of combustion, deal with it correctly. As to cleaning the pump. The acid water should prevent the growth of any bacteria. So I cannot think of any maintenance you need to do other than changing the media. Lastly to those that read this that may feel I am exaggerating. Early condensing furnaces and boilers did not produce a large quantity of condensate because they were really not that efficient. But equipment in the 90 plus percent AFUE range will produce a lot. And modulating product will produce it through the majority of the run cycle.

Will this work to pump the discharge and cleaning process from a whirlpool water softener and filtration system?
Asked by: Ash
I don;t believe this would be appropriate. Although I am unfamiliar with whirlpool water softeners, I have dealt with water softeners on limited basis. When they are back flushed to regenerate the media bed, roughly 20 gallons of water is used. That would exceed the storage and pumping capacity of this pump. This is a condensate pump. So this is used when you are moving one or two gallons an hour, not 20 gallons in a few minutes. You would want a product that can either move more water faster, have a larger storage capacity or both. You may want to consider a product like the Sani Vite which is on the Home Depot web site as SKU 206262171
