Thank you for your question regarding Scotts Turf Builder Kentucky Bluegrass Mix. When overseeding it is recommended to mow grass short prior to applying seed so that seeds reach the soil easier. After mowing loosen top of soil in thin areas. Once the new seedlings reach a height of 3 - 3 1/2 inches, it will be safe to mow again. Please contact us at 877-220-3089 if there is anything else we can help you with.

I'm in Zone 6b and have 300 hundred ft of new area, might I sow this "bluegrass" now or Fall or should I wait for Spring?

I lived in Maryland when I used this grass seed. I put down top soil and the seed in the fall. It came up early spring. Every fall If I had any patchy spots I filled the spot with a little top soil and seed for about two years. My neighbors always commented on how it look better than the golf course.

Thank you for your question regarding Scotts Turf Builder Kentucky Bluegrass Mix. As this seed has a water smart coating, we do not recommend soaking the seeds before application, as this can cause seed rot. I think now is the time to plant your grass seed. If the area isn’t real big, I would get a hard rake and rough up the dirt and possibly purchase some bags of topsoil and put down. Apply my seed and water throughly. If the area is big, I would use a cultivator or tiller before applying seed. Hop this helps.

I am for the first time ripping out my old grass and want to grow new grass.

Some basics....it sounds like a good seedbed. No, they don't need to be deep, just protected, like the peat will do. Water it daily. If it germinates, then dries out, you'll never get it back. This bluegrass is a slower germinator, so stay with the watering, and you should see results in about 2 weeks. Stay off it as much as you can other than the watering. If you haven't added starter fertilizer, you can put that on with good results after you see grass. Be sure it's a quality "Starter" fertilizer, and don't over apply it. Don't apply any more fertilizer for 8 weeks. Stay with the watering until it hits mowing height, then water at least an inch a week. I've used this exact product and while it looks kind of thin the first year, don't be discouraged. It really takes off the second year with reasonable conditions. It's been a good seed for me, but needs to be babied for awhile.

Hello young lady. I have used this product on a 'mixed' turf of grass and it slowly was replaced by the Turf Builder Bluegrass Mix Seed. Spread the seeds evenly throughout the total area seeded. In just one season the result will be noticeable.

Will a 3lb bag really cover 1000 square ft for new lawn ? most seeds i see are half that

No, it does not cover 3000 feet. More like 400 square feet. The seed does not work. I have really good soil, sun, and water. It does not grow much grass. It does grow weeds.

Did everything suggested, didn't work.
I did exactly as the bag recommends. Watered consistently, soil was warm. It's been a month and I still have blue sprinkles in my dirt beds (see pic). Not to mention, I reached out for a refund, they claim to have a 'money back guarantee' but they refuse to give me a refund. Very disappointing.

Great seed... KEEP IT WET
Works for me everytime I use it for bare spots. You MUST keep it wet though. Light, frequent watering is key. I watered 3, sometimes 4 times a day, for a minute or two at a time. I saw germination in 6 days.

Excellent Grass Seed
Customer review from scotts.com logo
I normall do not write reviews, but I feel I needed to with this success I have with these seeds. The norm for KBG germination is between 14-30. With the right prep work and I was able to get these seeds to germinate in 6 days. I just did a compete renovation of my front and back lawn 3 weeks ago covering 7500sqft and I would definitely use these seeds and recommend them.

Solid grass
Customer review from scotts.com logo
This seed is slow to germinate, but WILL germinate when given proper conditions. Soil temperature needs to be between 50 and 65 for best results with frequent watering. This is a hardy grass. I planted in late March in Illinois And it germinated and two days later, survived 5 consecutive nights in the 20’s and 6 inches of snow. Then it started growing again as temperatures rebounded. It is very very slow to establish but with proper care it will fill in to form a very thick lawn. I’ve been mowing at less than an inch and it has handled that cut just fine. It does seem susceptible to leaf spot when cut that low, however a simple fungicide program ( Scott’s Disease Ex ) when symptoms first show up fixes the problem with in days. It seems very drought resistant. The picture of this grass is with little irrigation. About 2” of rain over a 28 day period and full sun. In late afternoon or early morning When the sun is low, the light produces a nice emerald/blue hue. You really need about a year for this grass to fully establish.

Good if you like a lot of crabgrass
Customer review from scotts.com logo
Large section of lawn needed to be replaced after a water main break; started from scratch: watered faithfully twice a day for a month after fully fertilizing, liming, top soil, etc. All that came in is mostly crabgrass, overshadowing the few bluegrass seeds that survived. (photos attached)

Very little grass
I decided to redo my lawn this spring. I got very little actual grass. I got a lot of two different types of weeds. At least I think they're weeds. It's definitely not grass. Very disappointed.

We are sorry to hear that Scotts Turf Builder Kentucky Bluegrass Mix did not germinate as expected. All of our Scotts seeds are thoroughly cleaned and is 98.9% to 99.9% weed seed free. Natural soil contains thousands of seeds and when soil is disturbed, such as by rototilling, seeds that were deep in the soil may be brought to top of soil where growing conditions are better allowing them to germinate. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please contact us and refer to your review to see what can be done. We can be reached at 877-220-3089. Scotts

It's been about a week and a half and we are already seeing tall grass pop out from under the straw in some places and it's been very dry weather so just relying on the hose in the mornings. So I would say it's doing well. Can't wait till it comes in fully.

Blue Decorative Lawn Sprinkles
I planted in early spring in Northern Utah while we had early warm weather. I made sure to water the seeds well. We had a few rainstorms and the temp never got above 80. At the 4-week mark I became really skeptical. I could only find a few sprouts out of the thousands of seeds I had put down. The blue coating still seemed intact possibly preventing the seed from germinating? It's been six weeks now and the seeds are just lying on the dirt/sand/compost mixture that I leveled parts of the lawn with. I had some old patching mix from scotts (mostly ground red mulch) that I used last summer to grow back some dirt patches. I did not expect this fresh bag of premium seed to fail so miserably.

We apologize that you were not thoroughly satisfied with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix. Seed requires both continuous moisture and warm soil temperatures. When one of these conditions is missing, poor germination is the result. Be sure that no weed control or weed prevention products were used in your seedbed as those products will also prevent or inhibit the germination of the seed. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. At your earliest convenience, please contact us at 877-220-3089, and refer to your review. Scotts
