Q:What do I cover my new seed with and can I was the same spreader?
by|Mar 14, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Kentucky Bluegrass Mix Seed can be covered with a very shallow layer of a top dressing such as: Topsoil or other soil like product, peat moss or straw. Do not cover more than 1/4 inch thick or this will smother the seed. Straw and topsoil may introduce some weed seeds that need to be dealt with when the seedlings have been mowed several times. These products would be applied by hand not with a spreader.

Q:I live in southern eastern Virginia. Would it be okay to seed the lawn first of April? Also should I use turf builder crabgrass halt before if so how long after should I seed? Thanks for all answers in advance
    by|Mar 8, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Kentucky Bluegrass Mix Seed should be applied once the soil temperatures are above 55 degrees. In spring it takes 2 weeks with air temps consistently in the 60-80°F (15.5-27°C) range for the soil to warm up enough for seed to germinate. If you apply Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Food you must wait 4 months to seed. If seeding or laying sod first, do not apply Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Food until the new grass has been mowed 4 times.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix and appreciate your feedback. For best results, this product should be applied when daytime temperatures are consistently above 65℉, making the soil temperatures at least 55℉. In the spring, it takes a lot of consistent warm temperatures to warm up the soil. Cool nighttime temperatures can delay the germination process even if warm enough during the day. Germination should begin in 6-14 days under ideal growing conditions and will take about a month to fully germinate. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination. Weed control product used on sew seedlings will kill seedlings. Do not apply a weed control that is registered for lawn use until it has been cut at least 3-4 times. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.
Great all around grass seed !! Perfect blend
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The only seed I use. The sun and shade mix has a great blend of seed for the north east area. Resists bugs and always looks good in the summer heat. Germination is quick around 14 days you will see it sprouting. Don’t forget stater fertilizer when seeding

Great seed and a little rain; great combination
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Must say that this seed outperformed my expectations. Ok, I had a little help in that it rained every other day after I reseeded my lawn. As you can see, a full lush lawn ready to mow. Could not have asked for a better product

                  Seeds!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix is going to bring some of the lushness and life back to my lawn. The seed works great in my spreader and didn't jam it up or cause any functional issues.

                    Green grass galore!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] All I can say is wow not only is this grass seed making our yard look absolutely beautiful but the grass has never been thicker greener and softer. We get our yard treated at the beginning of spring because our dandelions are so bad so we always have spots of areas in our grass where it’s dead or there’s no grass at all I was able to put this on individual areas within a week I was seeing sprouts and within three weeks I had to green grass again, Which I’m sure all the rain we had helped also but you can see the difference from where I I put the grass seed and where I didn’t.

Great all in one grass seed
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great all in one grass seed with fertilizer built in. I have a few bare spots in my yard I wanted to grow grass back in and this has been coming in well. Easy to just spread and keep moist and it starts growing. Birds haven’t seemed to want to eat it either which is a plus.

                        Great seed product
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix is so easy to use, just literally plant and wait. Mine has already sprouted and I am awaiting my beautiful grass. Scotts has never let me down and has always exceeded my expectations. Product is effective and works quickly, I definitely recommend and will repurchase. The bag is not too heavy or bulky and I also see this as a great value!

                          Works as expected
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I threw some Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Kentucky Bluegrass Mix on some bare spots in my lawn. It has taken quite a while to germinate, but it's finally starting to come up and the bare spots are gradually starting to fill in. So far, I'm satisfied and would buy this again.

Grows Best in the Spring and Fall
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have two dogs, and my grass starts to look pretty spotty after some time. I was able to use Scotts® Turf Builder® Grass Seed to make it look good again. The Kentucky Bluegrass Mix is the perfect grass seed for me. I live in the Midwest, and it works well on my lawn. This lawn care product is a combination of three ingredients. It contains a grass seed, a fertilizer, and a soil improver that helps to establish deeper roots for a fuller, thicker-looking lawn. It is easy to use. I can manually throw the seed down where I need to patch my lawn, or I can use my Scotts Seed Spreader to evenly distribute it over my entire backyard. Either way, the Kentucky Bluegrass Mix grows in full sun but will tolerate some shade. It should be used in Spring or Fall when the weather temperature is between 60F and 80F consistently. I was able to prep my areas by mowing them, then I raked up any debris. I placed the seed pretty heavily in the spots that I needed to fill. Once it was placed, I watered it every day for about 3 weeks, as the directions read. This grass does grow nicely when you follow the directions properly. I did have some weeds growing in as well, but that is to be expected, as weeds are a part of native soil and often look for new soil and fresh nutrients to feed on. Overall, I was happy with the ease of caring for this seed, and at the rate that it grew. I will be getting more for future growing.
