About This Product

Get outside and enjoy your lawn with Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Sun & Shade Mix. With our revolutionary mix of grass seed and fertilizer in one effective formula, your lawn benefits from extended feeding, resulting in full, green grass. Compared to seed alone, your lawn will grow 2X faster (when applied at the new lawn rate, subject to proper care). Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Sun & Shade Mix grows green, lush grass in just weeks. Use on either new lawns or overseeding existing grass. For best results, apply in the spring or fall when air temperatures are consistently between 60°F and 80°F. We recommend using a Scotts spreader to apply this product (please refer to spreader settings on product label). Do not use weed control products until your lawn has been mowed at least 4 times. Q:Hi - I over seeded lawn 5 days ago. Existing lawn is growing fast and needs a cut. How soon can I mow?
by|May 9, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  I am glad you are checking in regarding when to mow after overseeding with Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Sun & Shade. You can mow your lawn based on the height of your existing grass, but try to minimize foot traffic as much as possible until the new seed has grown and become established. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

This product did not work at all.
I live in Florida and I bought this product a month ago, set my sprinklers to water twice a day but the seeds will not germinate. I dethatched, sacrificed, and raked everything up to ensure I have seed to soil and contact and fertilized with Scott’s 3 in 1 but still nothing. Prior to this, I bought the thick r lawn for the front yard and it did not germinate either so I tried this for the back yard to see if it would be better but of course, it did not. I'm very disappointed with Scott’s product this far.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Rapid Grass Sun & Shade and appreciate your feedback. Temperature plays a critical role in seed germination. Southern seed types (bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, bahiagrass, etc.) need soil temperatures of at least 70°F (21°C), with air temperatures in the 80's or higher (21°C or above). Seeds will not germinate if the temperatures are cold at night or are fluctuating from high day temperature to very low nighttime temperatures. Very hot weather will also inhibit seed germination. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-270-3714 if we can further assist.
            Terrible dandelion weeds
I bought two bags of this 2 months ago and sowed it in my backyard. My backyard was clear of weeds and was having black mulch before we turned the soil ready for sowing. But after sowing, in a week dandelions started to grow rapidly as if I was sowing dandelion seeds instead of grass. A few grass popped up too but now my backyard is full of dandelions and it looks terrible. I went through the ingredients in the bag it says .1% weed seeds but my bags had 90% dandelion weed seeds. I need compensation for this mishap. I used half from both bags and I still have half left in both of them. I have pictures and videos of the backyard before and after use.

Different grasses germinate at different times. Germination times on label are based upon the grass type in the bag that will germinate the quickest. Soil temperatures must be at least 55° F (+12.7° C) for grass seed to germinate.
Daytime temperatures need to consistently be over 65° F (18.3° C). In the spring, it takes a lot of consistently warm temperatures to warm up the soil. Cool nighttime temperatures and fluctuating temperatures will slow germination. Cold weather will delay germination, but will not hurt the seed. Both excessive moisture and not enough moisture can inhibit seed germination. Weed control used prior to seeding, such as using the crabgrass preventer, will prevent seed from germinating. Weed control products, like Weed & Feed or liquid weed controls, used on new seedlings will kill seedlings when they first germinate.

This product worked great here in Michigan.
Very happy. Live in Michigan. Planted seed before days of rain. See before pictures. I'm amazed. Grew in 3 to 4 weeks. Last picture after mowed

                      Rapid weeds
We bought 2 bags of this product and now we have our backyard full of weeds. We have no idea what to do with it now. It was black mulch earlier. No weeds at all. The bag was full of dandelion seeds it seems. It grew rapidly along with some grass as you can see in the picture.

It is normal to have some weeds germinate when seeding. There are approximately 10,000 weed seeds per 1 cubic foot of native soil. Soil preparation brings weed seeds to the surface. All Scotts seed is thoroughly cleaned and is 99.9% weed seed free, in fact The Scotts Advantage states weeds are removed from our crops by filtering Scotts seed 3 times. Our grass seed is harvested in June/July, well before the time of crabgrass maturity which occurs during late summer when it sets seed. Therefore it's not possible our crop can be contaminated with crabgrass seeds. Soil amendments such as manure and straw often contain weed seeds. Weed seeds can be blown or carried into area prior to grass seed becoming established.
