Q:What is the fertilizer contained within this product? Does this require an additional seed starter fertilizer? Adding NPK information to the description would be helpful.

1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Bermudagrass with Fertilizer and Soil Improver has an NPK of 4-0-0. This product thickens lawn by adding seed to fill in thin areas, provides fertilizer to stimulate grass growth and help seedling become establish, and provides soil enhancers that improves soil structure to encourage better root development. Applying any straight granule fertilizer, especially one designed for use when seeding will not harm the seeds or seedlings and technically can be applied any time before or after seeding but it is recommended to wait 2 to 4 weeks.

Response from Scotts Consumer ServicesNov 15, 2023
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Scotts Turf Builder Bermudagrass and appreciate your feedback. For best results, bermudagrass should be planted when day and nighttime temperatures are consistently between 70-90 degrees. Weed seeds are a natural part of native soil, so it is normal to have weeds grow when planting grass seed.

          Good product. Are seeds sterile?
I laid this down this past summer. It's starting to sprout seeds. Are the seed heads that grow from this product sterile?

Bermuda seed takes lots of diligence and water
I had a septic system started in March 2023. The drain field was seeded with rye grass which was only temporary. The machinery destroyed the standing buffalo grass. I put down Scotts Bermuda seed and it took well in all the bare areas, but I didn't cut the rye grass short enough to get germination. I had to go back and scalp it and reseed. Four 8 lb bags of seed and daily watering in stage 2 restrictions. Lots of hours of hand watering. It is pretty well established now and I am just trying to thicken the thin areas before starting to harden it off by reducing the watering.

Pleased with progress but wish it looked better.
I had a new construction back hard. After a year, just mostly dirt and a few weeds. I got a soil sample, killed the weeds, tilled the yard, raked away the rocks/straw/plastic liners, spread fertilizer, spread seed, lightly raked over dirt. It's been 3 weeks of 90+ degree heat and only 2 days of light rain for 30 minutes. I water 4 to 6 times per day for 10 minutes per sprinkler. Overly saturated areas near the sprinklers seem to have grown the quickest and thickest. Some days I look out and am pleased with the results and other days I think it's a mess. Overall, it is better than what I had. Hope the pictures help. Planted 6/1 and today is 6/23.

                  This product is total crap!!!!
DO NOT BUY!!!!! I bought 5lbs for $32. After 22 of watering in 75-80 degree sunny weather I don't even have a sprout. As soon as I spread it out, I did get a ton of weeds though. I had bought a 5lb bag of cheap seed for $20 and it germinated in 5-7 days. It also filled in nicely with minimal weeds. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRAP!!!!

                    Not growing
I bought 5lbs first and after 3 weeks nothing happened. Bought 10lbs again coz I needed more for the backyard, did everything I can still nothing. I followed instructions, watched the videos, used starter fertilizer, but it’s almost 6 weeks now and my front and back lawn is horrible. It’s so frustrating to look at especially all the neighbors has green lawn. Most of what grew at the back are weeds instead of Bermuda, I don’t know what to do anymore.

                        Not working for me
Prepare the ground. Cut the existing rye grass down. Dethached the yard. Three days later after heavy rain. Went back over my yard with a rake to get the remaining dead grass up to much as possible bare dirt. Used two bags(5lbs) each over 1,000sq ft along with starter fertilizer. It’s been three weeks.....in VA and weather is between 80-90 degrees. With me watering and rain it’s getting plenty of water. Have very few small places it has grown.....but 85% of the yard is still bare. Now The potential for weeds developing is a concern.
