Questions & Answers

can i use a spreader with this product and will it grow if it is just spread on top of the ground

Asked by: Action
I would not try to grow this or any grass seed by just throwing it on top of the ground. Rake the area, lightly break up the soil, and spread the seed. Then when it rains or when you lightly spray it with the hose the loose soil will become muddy and will cover the seed with a light layer of mud. I think that's the secret.

Backyard has a lot of dead spots. Unsure why. Will this help me out? Do I need to rake out dead areas first?

I had same situation. Raking out the dead area first is always beneficial, but not always necessary depending on the covering, be it thatch or leaves, etc. Clearing the ground will help the seeds reach soil quicker. This fills in the spots nicely!

I live in the Central Valley and temperatures reach over 105,how much water should I apply

Asked by: Jose7722
Keep the ground as moist as possible for at least 2-3 weeks ... moist not soaked so you'll probably be fine watering at night and in the morning. If its really dry lay straw down, it helps retain the moisture and provides a little protection from the sun

I spread two full large bags on unplanted soil. It is now sprouting, and about 10% looks like straight grass blades, and 80% looks like clover or something with several leaves. Is this the grass seed from the bag??

We are sorry that you are experiencing this issue after planting Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun & Shade Mix. Scotts grass seeds are thoroughly cleaned and are 99.9% weed seed free. Weeds can germinate during a new seeding project due to your native soil previously containing weed seeds and the area being disturbed. If you have other questions or you're unhappy with your purchase, please contact us at 877-220-3089.

For the last month, I’ve been on a hunt for a grass seed that works for me. I did a crude experiment to provide some information I couldn’t find in my searches online. The attached pictures compare Scott’s Sun and Shade Mix with Scott’s Landscaper’s mix over 30 days. They were planted in the same Scott’s soil, watered at the same time, and sat in the same sun. After 7 days, the Sun and Shade had very little germination. The Landscaper’s mix was coming up fast, and was already much taller. But, 27 days later, the Sun and Shade mix caught up and the grass is a much nicer color and texture. Below are the seed makeups. The Sun and Shade has much more fescue and bluegrass than the landscaper’s mix. The landscaper’s mix is almost a lime green color, which hasn’t blended well with my mostly-fescue lawn. The gulf annual rye grass especially in the landscaper's mix almost looks like nutsedge, and it grows MUCH faster than the rest of my grass. I like the Sun and Shade mix much more, but it really has to be babied and kept moist. If you take care of it, it will come up beautifully. If you put out seed and pray, no grass will grow nicely. After reading reviews, I ended up doubling the amount of seed recommended to be put down (I used 60 lbs on roughly 6000 sq ft). Other than that I followed the instructions to a T. I found it to be extremely durable. I live in upstate NY and the weather is always unpredictable. The day after I planted it, we got 3.5 inches of rain and the lawn sat underwater for a day or two. A few days later, it snowed just under an inch unexpectedly and stayed cold for a couple days. After that, I had given up on it and was going to lay more seed but my buddy who used it before encouraged me to wait. Sure enough, two weeks after I planted it, it started to pop up and came in nice and thick. It took a little longer than described but considering the weather, I wasn't upset!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Summer in the NE and still growing Later start this year for all outdoor planting. Decided to seed a new lawn the last w/e of June 2018 in Upstate NY (heatwave). Mostly shaded area with some afternoon sun. Knowing it was a bad time of year and very hot I have been watering WELL at LEAST 3x/day. GRASS IS GROWING! Prepped ground by loosening hard soil, added some topsoil and Scotts Turf builder lawn soil, rake out add seed rake gentle lots of water. so far so excellent!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from weeds weeds weeds I dont think I've written a bad review yet but I am very disappointed with this product. I didn't have weeds before I put this seed down. this was a new lawn installment. Everywhere I put this seed down, I grew 80 percent weed and 20 percent grass. horrible. i dont know what happened. I have used this product before and never got this result. So disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Results! I used this product as an "over seeding" to a troubled lawn with great results. The lawn can back rich and lush as if it were new sod. It did help that we got a lot of rain to supplement my watering. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

After the 2nd year in our home the front yard started to die and be replaced by weeds little by little (probably because I didn't weed or aerate like you're supposed to). We live in Central Florida so I took the time this past March while the weeds were down to reseed the lawn. I did the following to get the seed to take: 1. I aerated the lawn first making sure to punch holes every 6 inches. 2. I raked the lawn to remove and loose and dead top layer junk. (I had mowed a day previous). 3. I over seeded in the areas where I needed grass 4. I worked the seed into the ground and even went back with my manual aerator in certain spots 5. I watered every day for 5-10 minutes; just enough to make the ground wet. In about a week I had seed sprouting. After about 3-4 weeks the patches I had hit were filled with new grass. I just cut it for the first time and it looks great. Will be buying more soon to do the back yard. If you throw down the seed and do not prep the ground or water, you won't get any results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I used a hand spreader to apply this to my bare yard for initial seeding and it worked quite well. I had to apply a second bag after a couple of weeks due to bare spots, most of those spots are filling in but I still have some work to do, considering this seed is not meant to fill in a brand new yard I think it did a great job. I live in a brand new neighborhood and I was the only person to not do either hydro seed or sod and my lawn looks as good, if not better than others who hydro seeded, plus it was less expensive. Seeding in my area of the country is not easy considering the high winds and inconsistent weather. One day it will be 35 degrees and the next it can be 85 degrees but I still managed the seed to grow with reasonable expectations. I have to mention that I did follow the directions as closely as possible, I had a fence up to block any wind, my sprinklers ran on a timer with no dry times/spots and I applied it during early spring when it didn't get overwhelmingly hot.

Despite some of the bad reviews, I went with this mix because it has a blend of seeds that are fairly easy to grow in the Midwest, even if your a novice. The first time I used this product, I just threw it over some raked dirt. That did not work that well, but I decided I would try it again for the newest lawn project to date since I did not follow the directions. The second time I used it, I followed the directions as stated with a metal rake first to loosen the soil, put the seeds down, used a leaf rake after to sow the seeds into the dirt better, and used some old grass clippings to lightly finish over the top to help retain moisture. After 8 days, I am getting very good results. There are a couple of spots that are struggling but that's because my sprinkler system doesn't do a good job hitting that area and I am not around 24/7 to monitor the soil. That just goes to show that it really is about how much water you can get on your newly seeded area. I planted in a 85 to 95 degree stretch and just made sure it was watered as much as possible. Manufacturer recommends planting at 60 to 80 degrees. That would be much easier temps to grow, but hey I had to get something down so weeds did not grow in the bare soil.
