Questions & Answers

What kind of grass does this seed grow, and does it continue to grow in the summer and winter

Asked by: Babycakes
If cared for, it stays green all year round. It is a 'cool season' grass. It stops growing when soil temperatures go below 50 degrees or so.

can i use a spreader with this product and will it grow if it is just spread on top of the ground

Asked by: Action
I would not try to grow this or any grass seed by just throwing it on top of the ground. Rake the area, lightly break up the soil, and spread the seed. Then when it rains or when you lightly spray it with the hose the loose soil will become muddy and will cover the seed with a light layer of mud. I think that's the secret.

Backyard has a lot of dead spots. Unsure why. Will this help me out? Do I need to rake out dead areas first?

Located in Southern NJ
Asked by: FrankM
I had same situation. Raking out the dead area first is always beneficial, but not always necessary depending on the covering, be it thatch or leaves, etc. Clearing the ground will help the seeds reach soil quicker. This fills in the spots nicely!

I live in the Central Valley and temperatures reach over 105,how much water should I apply

Asked by: Jose7722
Keep the ground as moist as possible for at least 2-3 weeks ... moist not soaked so you'll probably be fine watering at night and in the morning. If its really dry lay straw down, it helps retain the moisture and provides a little protection from the sun

Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix 7 lb. is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 2762.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality Had never used this product for grass seed. It worked to fill in several small areas on my lawn. I have very sandy soil and it grew fast and strong. Would use again. The packaging was of great quality and very nice to use and store. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I used a hand spreader to apply this to my bare yard for initial seeding and it worked quite well. I had to apply a second bag after a couple of weeks due to bare spots, most of those spots are filling in but I still have some work to do, considering this seed is not meant to fill in a brand new yard I think it did a great job. I live in a brand new neighborhood and I was the only person to not do either hydro seed or sod and my lawn looks as good, if not better than others who hydro seeded, plus it was less expensive. Seeding in my area of the country is not easy considering the high winds and inconsistent weather. One day it will be 35 degrees and the next it can be 85 degrees but I still managed the seed to grow with reasonable expectations. I have to mention that I did follow the directions as closely as possible, I had a fence up to block any wind, my sprinklers ran on a timer with no dry times/spots and I applied it during early spring when it didn't get overwhelmingly hot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasted Money ! After reading more than I care to about grass seed , I thought I would try Scotts Turf Builder grass seed . It had been years since I had planted any grass and the local produced seed was no longer available . It was called Northwest Playground mix . When I used it I did almost zero prep on our glacial gravel except for removing larger rocks . And I watered it occasionally . I had to mow it in just over 3 weeks . This time I prepped by triple tilling down about 6" and then putting a top coat of 3 way top soil down . After over seeding and raking it in , I watered twice a day for the first 3 weeks and then went to a early morning soaking . Temps were perfect with highs between 60-85 . I am now about 6 weeks since I planted and other than some volunteer grass , only a few of Scotts seeds germinted . The only good thing is that the blue color kept most of the birds from feeding on it . Now I "get to" start over with someone elses seed , not what I wanted to have to do .

For the last month, I’ve been on a hunt for a grass seed that works for me. I did a crude experiment to provide some information I couldn’t find in my searches online. The attached pictures compare Scott’s Sun and Shade Mix with Scott’s Landscaper’s mix over 30 days. They were planted in the same Scott’s soil, watered at the same time, and sat in the same sun. After 7 days, the Sun and Shade had very little germination. The Landscaper’s mix was coming up fast, and was already much taller. But, 27 days later, the Sun and Shade mix caught up and the grass is a much nicer color and texture. Below are the seed makeups. The Sun and Shade has much more fescue and bluegrass than the landscaper’s mix. The landscaper’s mix is almost a lime green color, which hasn’t blended well with my mostly-fescue lawn. The gulf annual rye grass especially in the landscaper's mix almost looks like nutsedge, and it grows MUCH faster than the rest of my grass. I like the Sun and Shade mix much more, but it really has to be babied and kept moist. If you take care of it, it will come up beautifully. If you put out seed and pray, no grass will grow nicely. I purchased a 7 pound bag of this seed in May 2018 and attempted to reseed several areas of my lawn (over multiple months) in combination with fresh topsoill and regular watering. None of this seed actually grew into grass. My guess is that the blue coating on the seed somehow interferes with the seed’s ability to germinate. I’ve never had this problem before with generic, uncoated grass seed, which I will resume using next spring. I can’t believe a company with a good reputation like Scotts would release such a poorly performing product. Using this seed was a waste of $30 and lots of time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for patching bare spots. Great for patching bare spots in my yard but tried to over seed an area with limited success. Patched several areas in my yard by scratching the surface with a rake and then spreading the grass seed. Need to keep areas moist for about a week. Grass grew very thick. I tried to over seed an area with a lot of weeds with very limited success. Watered area as I did with bare spots.. After several months I applied weed killer to the area but very little grass was growing. Had to redo several times to fill in area with grass. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The proof is in the pics The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

When I purchased this grass seed I was looking for annual rye grass seed but it was gone and sold out. My plan was to fill in spots in my yard that were bare. The fescue seed did just that and as long as I keep my lawn mowed it doesn't matter if it isn't the rye seed. Scotts brand is one of the well known and best and I've trusted using their products. I've never found anything I dislike about Scotts brands. With a little bit of knowledge and commen sense it works great.
