Product Overview

  • Let's you know you are protected via LED's & audible alarm
  • Surge current capacity sized for where you live
  • FirstSurge protects any 120/240V branded load center
Not long ago, we turned knobs and dials to change TV channels or set wash cycles. Now, we're in the Internet of Things (Iot) era where homeowners are increasingly reliant upon connected devices. To ensure these devices 'just keep working', today's home requires constant surge protection. Knowing when a surge protector needs to be replaced is the KEY to remaining protected. Therefore, we developed FirstSurge, our commercial class total home surge protector. Installed at your load center, FirstSurge will stop surges before they get into your home. FirstSurge offers three grades of robustness to ensure long operational life depending upon the storm activity where you live. The key to remaining surge protected is knowing when a surge protector needs to be replaced. The gap of time between a surge protector wearing out until it is replaced is the time when your home is vulnerable to being hit by surges. When FirstSurge wears out, its commercial class 3-stage notification diagnostics immediately alerts you that it needs replacing. This type of notification results in a far shorter Mean Time Before Surge Protection Restoration (MTBSPR) when compared to standard whole house protectors equipped only with LED diagnostics. Knowing you're surge protected with commercial class protection gives you peace of mind that your smart appliances and electronics will always be surge protected. Make Siemens FirstSurge the first surge protector installed into your home.
  • When there is a problem, Siemens FirstSurge takes the guesswork out of knowing when it is time to be replaced; an audible alarm beeps, the green LED lights on the device will extinguish and the red service light will flash
  • FirstSurge is equipped with ground reference monitoring notifying you a rare safety hazard exists due to a compromised electrical system neutral to ground bond; in this case an audible alarm will beep, the green LED lights on the device will remain lit and the red service light will flash
  • FirstSurge power provides 60,000 Amp of surge current capacity per phase
  • For those looking for added robustness or who live in areas with higher number of thunderstorms consider upgrading to our FirstSurge Plus (100,000A) or FirstSurge Pro (140,000 A) models
  • Surge exposure map correlating storm frequency and intensity with increasing FirstSurge capacities; any FirstSurge will protect in all regions, but selecting the recommended surge current capacity increases robustness to ensure lasting protection
  • FirstSurge balanced 600-Volt protection ratings means every primary paired conductor (line to neutral, line to ground and neutral to ground) will knock down surge over voltages to safe levels
  • Every FirstSurge electrical AC service protector is equipped with worry free commercial class 3-stage notification; when FirstSurge wears out, its audible alarm will beep, protection status LED/s extinguish and red service LED flashes
  • When 3-stage notification activates, you turn off FirstSurge dedicated breaker and you contact your electrician to arrange for installation of replacement unit
  • FirstSurge can be used to surge protect any load center brand when connected to a 30 Amp or less 2 pole circuit breaker
  • Every FirstSurge electrical AC service protector is assigned underwriters laboratories highest robustness nominal discharge current of 20kA
  • FirstSurge is designed to surge protect standard residential split phase 120/240, 60 Hz system voltage
  • FirstSurge is constructed using our commercial grade NEMA 4X enclosure allowing for indoor or outdoor installations
  • Every FirstSurge electrical AC protector is UL 1449 listed as a 'Type 2' surge protective device (SPD)

Would installation of the Siemens FS060 on the inside of the panel comply with NEC code?
Asked by: Ronnie
Ronnie, please consult with an electrician before installing this. Certain codes are different in different states. In certain states NEC does not wan't this mounted externally. Thanks,

I want load surge protection both when all are powered by my main panel and when some are generator powered through a transfer panel. Three questions: 1. Can a First SurgeSurge Protection Device be used on a generator transfer panel to protect the loads being powered by a generator from surges originating at the generator? 2. If so, can a separate FirstSurge Surge Protection unit be used simultaneously at the main panel to protect loads that remain connected to the electric utility and are not being powered by the generator? 3. Since the main panel provides the ground and neutral conductor network to all the loads, including the generator transfer panel loads, is there a danger of an interaction between the two surge protection units that would damage or defeat one or both of the units?
Asked by: Ken
1) If your generator transfer panel has provision to add a dedicated two pole 20A breaker to serve as the FirstSurge disconnect, then yes, you can connect it to panel transfer switch. 2) Based upon your explanation, it would be advisable to install a FirstSurge unit at the main panel as well to protect loads that are not powered by the generator. 3) There is no danger having two surge protectors. Sharing a common neutral and equipment ground does not harm the SPDs or cause them to be damaged.

What is the clamping voltage of this device? Also, what is the response time of this device? Ideally, I want a surge protector with a response time of 1 nanosecond or faster.
Asked by: MauiMom
Take a look in the product brochure which is on the product page. It lists a lot of good detail including the response time.

Customer Reviews

FirstSurge Power 60kA Whole House Surge Protection Device is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Build quality a cut above. Easy to install. Love knowing I’m protected! As another reviewer noted, it’s basically impossible for me to determine if this unit “works”. It’s lit up, telling me that all is well. If it were to indicate a failure I could presume that it served its job, giving its life for me while absorbing the spike. But even then I couldn’t truly know if that’s what happened or if it simply failed. I believe that (almost) the only way to test one of these units would be in a lab. If you knew your house were hit with lightening and this unit confirmed the fact, while no internal devices were damaged … now that would be a great testament, but most of us reviewing this protector won’t be in that boat, I suspect. If I could give 6 stars for quality I would. This product exudes quality design and construction just holding it. The leads are #8 AWG – enough for use with 30A breakers and they are long. The instructions tell me to keep them as short as possible (presumably to enable it to absorb the spike quickly, before anything else sees it) and to avoid abrupt bends. I have a very old main panel and mounting options were limited. I reworked some breaks to give me a full available space and installed two 20A mini breakers. The instructions said 20A – not sure why they used #8 AWG. You want two breakers because there are two main feeds coming in and you want to protect both. I don’t believe you want a double pole, though. As mentioned, I installed singles. The device has two monitoring circuits and can signal failure in either one. I drilled a 1 1/16” hole exactly 1 ½” from the back of the panel so that it would align with the input to device when mounted on the same board that the panel is on. I included a photo of the two inexpensive plastic conduit components that I used to join the device to the panel. I wanted metal as was shown on the huge poster in HD for this very device but there was no one to help me and I couldn’t find it. I’m perfectly happy with the plastic, though. I kept my leads VERY short, as the breakers are located right near the new hole that I drilled. I will say the device looks pretty slick with the bright green LEDS glowing, telling me it’s on watch!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Protection This is a really nice surge protector. Instructions are straightforward, and installation is easy. I installed this myself in about 30 minutes. I had to knock out a 3/4" hole in the side of the panel, then secure the surge protector with a threaded bushing (not included). I then screw the ears to the wall so it is not going anywhere. How it performs remains to be seen, but it's thunderstorm season in GA, so I installed this just in time. They say to hook it to a 2 pole 20 Amp breaker, but I did not have one in my panel, so I hooked it to a 30 Amp 2 pole. Should be fine. For this area in the South, they actually recommend a bigger unit, but the 60kA one will have to do. Unit has LED's to indicate operational staus at a glance, very nice! Everybody should have one of these to protect all the sensitive electronics we are all surrounded by these days!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every home should have one This is one of those items that every home should have, but no one really thinks about. The FirstSurge line of surge protection devices are sized for three different zones, based on risk of surges from thunderstorms. The units are large, but surprisingly lightweight. This makes them very easy to mount next to your load center, or in some cases inside it if it's large enough. The installation is simple enough that most could do it on their own, but since this device requires being installed to the load center of a home, a licensed electrician should be used in all cases - especially to support any claims for damaged devices if a surge hits.
