Product Overview

Siemens introduces PL Series Load Centers - a new high quality and feature-rich line of load center products to meet applications for virtually every need. The PL Series load center provides maximum flexibility in combination with labor saving features to aid the contractor while installing the product. PL load centers feature the patented insta-wire neutral/ground system, convertibility, copper bussing, and mounting tabs on the trim - these features were specifically engineered to decrease installation time and increase flexibility.
  • Single phase 200 Amp main lug load center with 12 spaces/24 circuits
  • Features Siemens patented insta-wire technology which allows for quick and easy installation because screws are already backed out, ready for wire insertion on ground and neutral bars
  • Copper bus
  • All devices are provided with 2 factory installed ground bars
  • Combination head screw on the neutrals, ground, trim, upper pan, and bond screw provide installation flexibility
  • All PL series devices convertible from main lug to main breaker and vice versa
  • Mounting tabs on the trim hold the load center in place freeing up both hands to drive the trim screws
  • A rigid, sturdy base pan provides the ruggedness required for the harshest applications
  • NEMA type 3R: enclosure is intended for outdoor use primarily to provide a˚ of protection against falling rain and sleet and must remain undamaged by the formation or ice on the enclosure; they are not intended to provide protection against conditions such as dust, internal condensation, or internal icing
  • PL Series Single Phase load centers are being phased out, and replaced by the new PN Series Plug-On Neutral load centers, PW1224L1200CU equivalent is the new PNW1224L1200C

Can this box be used for 100 amp service?

Asked by Sam May 4, 2018

Answer

PW3040L1200CU can be converted for 100A service entrance by installing a back fed 100A main with hold down kit in positions 1&3. You also lose use of spaces 2&4 because of the hold down kit. A better choice would PW3040B1100CU which comes with a 100A main breaker installed. To download the cut sheet for this item go to link below and click on "Downloads" and enter PW3040B1100CU in the search box. https://w3.usa.siemens.com/powerdistribution/us/en/speedfax-product-catalog/Pages/speedfax-product-catalog.aspx

Can this be flush mounted next to the main panel outside?

Asked by MM December 31, 2017
1
Answer

PW2040L1200CU cannot be fully flush mounted as the hinged door will not operate. The outdoor panels at best can only be mounted semi-flush. To download the cut sheet for this item go to link below and click on "Downloads" and enter PW2040L1200CU in the search box. http://w3.usa.siemens.com/powerdistribution/us/en/Pages/low-medium-voltage.aspx

can you have a disconnect with this box

Yes, you can have a 200 amp disconnect at the meter and feed this main lug loadcenter inside the house with a 4-wire feeder. You must add a ground bar kit to the panel and isolate the neutral from the grounded panel box.

door is shown does it have a breaker cover also

Hi Mark, To convert this panel to a main breaker load center you would need to install a MBK125A which you can find here: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Siemens-125-Amp-Main-Breaker-Conversion-Kit-MBK125A/202276325?keyword=MBK125A

Hi caddyben, Yes, this panel is 120/240 volts.

Can I mount two 100 amp breakers in this panel to serve as mains for two separate (remote) distribution panels?

Answer

Hello, The Siemens part number for a 2 pole 100 Amp breaker is a Q2100P. You should be able to pick one up at your local Home Depot. I would recommend contacting a professional electrician to confirm that your application would be compliant to the NEC code.

Happy with build quality.
The product is used for my solar installation. Great build quality and features. Copper bus and easy to open front panel are nice.

Would have been better if it had a multi-direction lug for the ground wire. Other than that a good piece of equipment.

Summary: A great panel with serious shortcomings (that may or may not bother you). Pros: - Full-length and pre-installed ground and neutral bars - Grounding screw to tie neutral to ground - Neutral strap can be removed for a dedicated equipment ground bar - Plenty of mounting options - Hex-socket lugs don't strip or break easily - Invertible panel for bottom entry service Cons: - One of my panels didn't include a weatherproof top-entry cap - One of my panels had the cover panel lodged behind a few tabs, requiring me to almost break the box to remove it - When inverted, the cover panel (the one that allows you to access the breaker handles but protects the wires behind it) no longer fits - Knockout are exceptionally difficult to remove - Ground bars are somewhat awkward in their staggered arrangement Review: The panel itself is great. In theory, it allows you to switch from a main lug to a main breaker, and from a top feed to a bottom feed application. The full length neutral and ground bars provide plenty of options for wiring. There are more bonding screws than you will likely need, even for 24 circuits. The panel also provides a top hangar-mount, making it possible to position, hang, then fasten down the panel. This simply helps with alignment and makes it easier to install alone, which is a nice feature. Now, despite all that, there were some (major) problems. I ordered two panels. On one of them, the cover panel that protects the breakers was recessed behind a few tabs it was supposed to sit in front of (sorry, I don't have a picture). As a result, I had to severely bend the panel, and even the box itself a bit, to remove the cover panel just so I could access the wiring area. To me, this shows a low bar for QC because it's not an error that could happen easily. Furthermore, one of my panels didn't come with the weatherproof top entry cap. I ended up using the one from my previous panel, but when you pay ~$75 for a panel, you expect a measure of quality that simply didn't come through with this product. Finally, I had a bottom feed application, so this product appealed to me because it's invertible. What they don't tell you is that the cover plate to protect all the wires does not fit when the interior busbars are inverted. The breakers move vertically, and with the cover plate both rightside-up and upside-down, it doesn't fit. This, to me, has been my biggest frustration because it defeats the point of being invertible. Especially now that all my wires are cut to length, the holes have been drilled through my wall for the panel knockouts, and it's wired up, it's difficult to return these panels for new ones that hopefully won't have these problems. So I'm sort of stuck with it. Is it a good panel, yes. Are you likely to encounter the problems I did, maybe. Will those problems bother you, possibly. In the end, a series of rather stupid oversights turn a potentially great panel into something I'd have expected to find at a scrapyard. I would have uploaded some pictures, but Home Depot's website failed to upload the pictures, even after reducing the file size.
