Product Details

The Strong-Drive SDWH Timber-Hex HDG screw is a hot-dip galvanized fastener suitable for heavy-duty marine and coastal applications. It's ideal for use in structural pilings, piers, docks, boardwalks and offers the lowest installed cost for comparable pile solutions on the market. No longer do you need to purchase expensive auger drill bits, separate washers, nuts or bolts. Installation time is faster because you install only from one side and no predrilling is required.
  • Features a SawTooth point design, which provides fast starts and no predrilling or separate washer needed
  • Burly 0.276-in shank diameter ideally suited for heavy-duty structural applications
  • 3/8-in hex drive for secure driving
  • Oversized 0.93-in integral washer eliminates the need for a separate washer
  • Length: 8-in
  • ASTM A153 Class-C hot-dip galvanized coating suitable for coastal and marine environments
  • For best results, use a minimum of 1/2 in. low-speed corded drill to install

Q:To be 100% clear, should I use a 1/2" drill bit to install these? Description just says 1/2" drill.
    by|Apr 16, 2020
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  No, the 1/2" drill reference is not to a bit. (Note: these screws have the SawTooth point design for fast starts and no predrilling.) Drills are typically available in 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch sizes. The measurement refers to the size of the drill chuck — the part that holds the bit — and indicates the maximum-diameter bit shank that fits the drill. A 1/4-inch chuck is sufficient for a light-duty driver. A 3/8-inch drill is common for work around the home and accepts a wide range of bits. A 1/2-inch drill handles heavier applications. Thank you!

      Answer This Question

A:  The SDWH Timber-Hex HDG screw has a SawTooth™ point and oversized integral washer that makes for fast installations; no predrilling or separate washer needed. For best results, it is recommended to use a minimum of 1/2" low-speed corded drill to install. However, I did speak to one of the engineers involved with testing of this product and he says it depends on the model of the drill, but they install these with battery powered drills often without problems. Thank you!

I had some 2" x 8" pieces of cedar that I was joining together to make a 24" x 36" slab of cedar. These screws were being used to hold them together along with the use of 5/8" dowels and industrial strength glue. I only had to use 4 of them but on 2 of them the heads rounded off when trying to screw them in. I was using a 1/4" drive 3/8" top quality socket connected to my electric drill. I had drilled a 1" diameter countersunk hole along with a pilot hole so the screw didn't have to do much work getting screwed in. The heads rounded off about halfway through screwing them through the pilot holes. This was before they had to do any real work of screwing through the raw wood. Cedar is not a hard wood and this should not have happened. I had a tough time getting them back out so I could try another screw. A 50% failure rate is not very good. DON'T BUY THESE UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPEND EXTRA TIME AND MONEY!

Hi Captain. This is Colin with Simpson Strong-Tie. Sorry for the delayed response, but we only recently received access to respond to reviews on this website. We are also sorry to hear about your experience. It is difficult to diagnose the problem from your post, but this screw requires a 3/8" hex driver and we recommend using a corded drill with a 1/2" chuck (although I have installed several of these on my deck with a 1/4" impact drill into dense southern pine without a problem). If the 3/8" hex driver is loose on the head of the screw, it may be time to replace it. Impact drivers make quick work for installing screws like this, but will also wear out hex drivers more quickly. SimpsonStrongTie

I have used a few hundred of these screws, and I think they are great. Compared to Lag bolts, this cuts labor by a third ( no two-step hole drilling). I use a 1/2" electric impact, and have never stripped a head or broken a bolt. The big washer head is very helpful and makes it easy to apply sealant @ clearance hole. They are rated, unlike lag bolts, which makes them easier to use in drawings and getting through planning. Really very happy with this product. Would love to see and even thicker bolt with same self drilling head.

Excellent lag screw to tie a deck to the house
A very strong, heavily galvanized lag bolt. Just the ticket to install the Simpson deck tie back brackets. They are long enough to reach deep into the house bottom plate for a very secure tie-up, as required by most building codes.

            Load bearing wall beam
Exellent screw. Very sturdy. Very large bite on the thread. I only needed four of these. Had no problems with the head stripping. I did predrill a small pilot hole just to avoid possibility of a wood crack. Powered them in with my cordless drill. Used them on 4 x 6 riser beam when taking out a load bearing wall.
