2018 IRC and DCA-6 dictates the use of 1/2" protective coated or rust resistant lag bolts OR through bolts. There is no alternative listed in these code references. However, the local building official can approve (or deny) the use of structural screws for ledger attachment. There are also specific restrictions as to "where" on the ledger any means of attachment can be placed and used. Keep in mind, if the back side of the band joist is not accessible for inspection the deck must be a free standing deck with no attachment to house.

You can use 1-1/2” Strong tie screws if attaching to a single thickness 2” x 8” joist. If attaching to a double rim joist (3” thick) use 2-1/2” screws.

are these as strong as Simpson SD#10 (ie. equivalent to 16d nails or stronger)?

Shear strength for the SDS screw is 250, I believe the average shear strength on a 16D nail is 130. It varies a bit if it's sinker or nail gun nail.

Can these be used for deck blocking?

Answer

Unless you have elephants on the deck, this screw would be way over-kill.

Will this fit in a simpson joist hanger that uses #9 screws?

Asked by Kevin September 3, 2019

Answer

No, the SD #9 replaces 10d common nails (0.148" diameter); the 1/4" SDS screws would be too large. Thank you!

What is the Shear strength of the fastener?

Asked by joe March 31, 2017
1
Answer

There are different factors that affect the shear strength, i.e. the type of wood it is being installed in, application, steel side plate or wood side plate, the thickness of the side plate, etc. Please visit our website or C-F-2017 Fastening Systems catalog (pages 329-333) for complete information. Thank you!

what size of STRONG TIE SD SCREW should i use for a 2x10 going on 6x6 cedar posts

Asked by MIKE June 28, 2014

Answer

The loads for our SDS screws are based on Douglas Fir/Southern Pine or Spruce-Pine-Fir/Hem Fir. It would be up to the Designer to specify the appropriate fastener based on the framing layout, demand loads, etc. Thank you!

Is this a #9 screw? I am going to use a bracket that calls for #9.

Asked by Nan August 27, 2020

Answer

This is not a #9 screw. The #9 screw permitted for use with some Simpson Strong-Tie connectors is the #9 SD Connector screw shown at the following link: https://www.strongtie.com/strongdrive_exteriorwoodscrews/sd_screw/p/strong-drive-sd-connector-screw. Thank you!

Great screw! I used it to attach heavy duty shelves to studs in a shed wall. In theory you don't need to drill pilot holes, but I did in order to avoid the risk of splitting the studs.
