Deck-Drive DWP stainless-steel fasteners are recommended for higher-exposure environments or applications

The Strong-Drive SD Connector screw is specifically designed to replace nails in certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The load-rated SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. In certain applications screws are easier and more convenient to install than nails, and the single-fastener load values achieved by the SD screw exceed those of typical 10d common or 16d common nails. In addition, the galvanized coating makes the SD screw ideal for interior and most exterior conditions.
  • Tested and approved for use in many of Simpson Strong-Tie's best-selling connectors for both interior and most exterior applications
  • Ideal for use in connector applications where more control is desired or using a hammer is inconvenient
  • Shank is specifically designed to match the fastener holes in Simpson Strong-Tie connectors
  • Patented serrated threads and sharp point make driving easy
  • Optimized heat treating for ductility and strength
  • The single-fastener load capacity of the SD10 exceeds that of the 16d common nail
  • Hex driver included
  • Mechanically galvanized, Class 55 coating meets the requirements for use in preservative-treated and fire-retardant-treated wood per the 2012 and 215 IRC
  • Quantity: 100
  • Common project applications: remodeling, fencing, storage, cabinets, framing

are two different size screws used with 2x10 single simpson joist hangars?

If it is mounted on a double-ledger or joist, 2-1/2" screws should be used. These 1-1/2" screws are for mounting on a ledger or joist one board thick.

Can we use these screws to attach deck hangers and replace bad hanger nails that have popped out?

You should be able to unless the nail has enlarged the hole enough to prevent the screw from getting a good bite into the wood.

This Screw will not connect a joist directly to a header if hanging the joist on the side face of the header or setting on top. It is made to structurally connect a joist hanger to the joist and the header. This is the strongest method to hang joists to headers and is often required by local building code. The hanger you use should specify the size and length of the fasteners approved for use. Otherwise, it is a great screw, have used them many times when attaching something relatively thin (see the smooth shank) to wood. They are a bit more expensive due to being specially made out of an alloy that performs better than most screws in structural settings. They do make different sizes (gauge, like 9 or 10 stamped on head) and lengths. I have used this size the most, but also the 2 1/2 inch, when required by joist hanger specs. Hope this helps!

As far as I know they are not designed for use in concrete but they were outstanding for use with two wooden gates I used them for. That being said I have used non-concrete screws in concrete block with success. What I do is where a hole has already been established for the screw I insert two round wooden toothpicks in the hole before inserting the screw. When you slowly tighten the screw the toothpicks fill in the gaps and give the screw its holding power. That worked for me.

Not very strong
I used these for joist hangers for a deck and unfortunately many of them sheared off. I wasn't over tightening them. They all sheared off at the same place, right at the start of the thread. Luckily the joist hangers had more holes than I needed to put screws in, so I could just put one in another hole. I didn't count how many sheared off but I'm guessing about 5-10% and that was even after I was being extra careful. Besides that I liked them. The driver worked fine.

Excellent! Use a 1/4" impact driver and drive away! I framed out all the joists and set my 6x6 posts with these on a new 16x14 foot composite deck. Used Simpson strong tie joist hangers for 2x10 joists and Simpson strong tie 6x6 base plates to mount the posts to the concrete piers. It doesn't get any easier. The framing was way over engineered, but with the Wolf composite having a 50 year warranty, the few extra bucks gave me piece of mind. Just need to finish my steps and it will outlast anything in the county. Highly recommended.

I used these with angle brackets to attach my foundation top plate to the house's floor joists (er, the 2x6 that runs around the perimeter of the house) for seismic reasons. Most went in without a problem (some needed a little help with a hammer to get them started), didn't see any splitting in 60yr old wood. I won't know if they are really good until an earthquake hits, tho. Check back then...
