Questions & Answers

can these tiles be installed over an existing laminate floor or do we need to get down to subfloor

Asked by: Dana
If your laminate floor is another floating system: no. If you are going over an existing vinyl floor, it must meet joist, deflection and tolerance (flatness) specs. If you have humps or bumps that exceed the tolerance spec, you will need to flatten those out before installation.

Will this tile support a full size refrigerator?

Asked by: Denise
The SnapStone floating porcelain flooring system is designed to function in rooms with appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines, etc., as long as all of the subfloor specifications are met, including thickness, joists, tolerance (flatness) and deflection. You can find the subfloor specifications on our website at snapstone.com. Please note that some floor prep may be required before installing the SnapStone floating flooring system. Meeting subfloor specifications is critical for a successful installation. Please call us at 877-263-5861 if you have any other questions. Thank you.

Can I install this over an existing porcelain tile floor that's level and in good shape? If so, would it literally just be sitting on top of the old tile floor?
Asked by: BusyMom
In theory you can however, check the height of the finished flooring as this may cause problems with baseboards, thresholds, and even toilet installation.

can this be put on the outside of a tub?
Asked by: cc
The SnapStone interlocking flooring system can be used as a bathroom floor, but should not be used as a shower floor. Please see our website for instructions and tips on installing around the toilet flange, around the vanity, caulking the perimeter, etc., for bathroom installations. Or call us at 877-263-5861. Thank you.

The only problem I had is I feel like the product is a bit fragile. With traditional tile, you would mortar to the base board but in this case, you are floating. I dropped my measuring tape twice from standing height and cracked two tiles, thus having to unsnap the tiles to get back at them. I worry about what happens when I'm done and drop something after everything is grouted. There will be no way to cut that piece out and secure it to other tiles. It will be only secured by grout. You won't be able to access the tabs. Seems like a heavy price to pay for tile that really only saves you in labor. Pricing it out, traditional methods are still cheaper by about $1.50-$2.00 a foot, but this installation is WAY quicker. I just hope I don't regret this down the road. I'd recommend it but with this reservation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BUYER BEWARE I put in this system with a heated flooring option, made sure everything was right, all the joints sealed, and all of the grout in with caulk around the edges. After about a month after the installation I had a small sewage back flow (maybe 2 gallons of water). Water proceeded to seep through the grout, mold the heater pad and all the underlayment. I called Snapstone and they couldn't believe their product had a defect. They also told me that this product SHOULD NOT BE INSTALLED AROUND MOISTURE. I had to tear up the entire floor i had just installed and deal with re-flooring all over again. The most they would do is send me a bucket of grout ( 6 weeks after the incident had happened and I had already installed traditional tiles) Not so frustrated with the product as I am with the company. They believe in their products more than their customers. The tiles looked great, installed easy, but they are not a quality long term solution for a bathroom floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product This is a fantastic product. I used SnapStone to tile our laundry room floor and it was the first, and so far, only tiling project I have done. This system made my work look like it was done by a professional. There was no hassling with thin set and the joints came out perfectly uniform and level. The customer service at SnapStone is awesome. They were very accessible by phone and were willing to take their time to talk me through all of my questions. Joe even gave me his cell number and encouraged me to call any time I had a question, which I did at least three times. I won't say it was easy but if you follow the instructions, take your time with layout and have a solid floor that meets the requirements for deflection, your project should turn out looking as if it were done by a pro.

The preset grout lines really make it easy to lay down the tiles without spending extra time to put in spacers and continually make sure they stay in place. A couple things to note: the snap together feature while convenient takes a little practice, so make sure that you play with it ahead of time and you will need a soft hammer to ensure the tile snap together; when making cuts you will have to make sure that the snap grooves are properly lined up so that you can connect the cut tiles, which causes extra waste, so be sure to order extra; at the walls especially with small pieces snapping the tile in is challenging and you will need a crowbar or something to leverage the tile into place; last thing is cutting...the plastic snap cage on the bottom of the tile will wear down your saw blade and after a bit you'll need another blade so that when you cut the tile the cuts are clean and smooth.

Grout and tile are expensive but only product we could find that would work in a basement without fear of warping, potential water damage, etc. If the price was reduced some we would consider for other rooms in house. This is our ongoing basement project so we are ordering tile and grout as funds permit. Enjoy the photos. I gave it 4 stars since we consider the price high and obviously want to see how it last and performs. Other wise we hope Home Depot continues to carry this product. Wish it was an in-store product.
