Questions & Answers

can these tiles be installed over an existing laminate floor or do we need to get down to subfloor

Asked by: Dana
If your laminate floor is another floating system: no. If you are going over an existing vinyl floor, it must meet joist, deflection and tolerance (flatness) specs. If you have humps or bumps that exceed the tolerance spec, you will need to flatten those out before installation.

Can I install this over an existing porcelain tile floor that's level and in good shape? If so, would it literally just be sitting on top of the old tile floor?
Asked by: BusyMom
In theory you can however, check the height of the finished flooring as this may cause problems with baseboards, thresholds, and even toilet installation.

Can this floor tile be installed over heated floors?

Can this floor tile be installed over heated floors?
Asked by: Mossy
Yes, as long as it doesn't expose the back of the interlocking system to temperatures exceeding 100 degrees F and if the heated system meets all of the sub floor specifications for flatness, deflection, sub floor thickness and joist configuration. After prepping your sub floor to meet all specs, a heated system such as Quiet Warmth Film by MP Global Products is a good choice. Please give us a call at 877-263-5861 for more info on sub floor specs and heated systems. Thank you.

Product is excellent as I purchased and installed in my home 2 years prior. The procuct received through Home Depot had 3 tiles (of 5 per box) that were broken in three of the boxes purchased. Since these were special order, I could not hand pick the product. It seems that with product that is expensive, snapstone would do a better job with packaging. Disappointed customer.

The preset grout lines really make it easy to lay down the tiles without spending extra time to put in spacers and continually make sure they stay in place. A couple things to note: the snap together feature while convenient takes a little practice, so make sure that you play with it ahead of time and you will need a soft hammer to ensure the tile snap together; when making cuts you will have to make sure that the snap grooves are properly lined up so that you can connect the cut tiles, which causes extra waste, so be sure to order extra; at the walls especially with small pieces snapping the tile in is challenging and you will need a crowbar or something to leverage the tile into place; last thing is cutting...the plastic snap cage on the bottom of the tile will wear down your saw blade and after a bit you'll need another blade so that when you cut the tile the cuts are clean and smooth.

Grout and tile are expensive but only product we could find that would work in a basement without fear of warping, potential water damage, etc. If the price was reduced some we would consider for other rooms in house. This is our ongoing basement project so we are ordering tile and grout as funds permit. Enjoy the photos. I gave it 4 stars since we consider the price high and obviously want to see how it last and performs. Other wise we hope Home Depot continues to carry this product. Wish it was an in-store product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product This is a fantastic product. I used SnapStone to tile our laundry room floor and it was the first, and so far, only tiling project I have done. This system made my work look like it was done by a professional. There was no hassling with thin set and the joints came out perfectly uniform and level. The customer service at SnapStone is awesome. They were very accessible by phone and were willing to take their time to talk me through all of my questions. Joe even gave me his cell number and encouraged me to call any time I had a question, which I did at least three times. I won't say it was easy but if you follow the instructions, take your time with layout and have a solid floor that meets the requirements for deflection, your project should turn out looking as if it were done by a pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looking good after four years I installed this in my kitchen about four years ago. It was a DIY project. We were diligent about getting the wood floor underneath as level and planar as possible and that took the bulk of the effort. The snapstone itself was easy to put together and grout. Four years on still looks great.

The only problem I had is I feel like the product is a bit fragile. With traditional tile, you would mortar to the base board but in this case, you are floating. I dropped my measuring tape twice from standing height and cracked two tiles, thus having to unsnap the tiles to get back at them. I worry about what happens when I'm done and drop something after everything is grouted. There will be no way to cut that piece out and secure it to other tiles. It will be only secured by grout. You won't be able to access the tabs. Seems like a heavy price to pay for tile that really only saves you in labor. Pricing it out, traditional methods are still cheaper by about $1.50-$2.00 a foot, but this installation is WAY quicker. I just hope I don't regret this down the road. I'd recommend it but with this reservation.
