Questions & Answers

Can an extension be put on the auger to dig at least 42" deep?? Is the output shaft 7/8" diameter?

Asked by: Capnjack
Output shaft is 7/8". Auger blade is held in by pin so it could be interchangeable. Though I am pretty sure the auger blade installed will dig at least 42".

Has anyone tried using this on frozen ground during winter? I am buying a house in the northeast and in the middle of December. I need to get a fence up ASAP and will be concerned about getting through the frozen ground.
Asked by: Joe
Maybe you'll need a narrow bit, the auger head is fine but when you find hard earth or roots or stones, a sligtly narrow bit empowers the head, i don't know how is in frozen terrain but i guess is hard, I hope this can be useful to you.

What is the weight? How hard is this to handle.

I'm a rather small woman who wants to build a fence. According to the description this machine weighs 39.7 pounds. That's great. But according to the description in holds 32 gallons of gasoline!! There is no way I could lift that much weight. Is the 32 gallon tank a misprint?
Asked by: 1smallwoman
32 is a misprint. It doesn't even hold a half gallon. Easy to use and light in comparison to others i have used.

43cc Earth Auger Powerhead with 8 in. Bit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 125.

Returned to Home Depot. Fuel oil mix was 50-1 ratio. To me, it seemed a little weak. Could hardly tell there was oil in the gas

Lightweight and easy to use,but even the smallest rock stops the auger, requires you to stop and remove the rock to continue. Returned to store and rented a tow behind that was much better suited for the job I was doing.

The auger bogs down often & the hole must be cleaned out & a digging iron used to loosen the soil for the auger to continue. Using the auger is still better than digging the entire hole by hand.

It could stand to have a little more power but does fine in my sandy loam soil. I managed to get 3 holes dug but on the 4th hole something happened. The motor was still running but the auger will no longer turn, I don't know if it has an internal shier pen that broke or if something in the gear box came apart. I am currently awaiting direction from an approved repair shop, which is no where near my house(about 80 miles away). I could not take it back to the store because I had already put gas in it.

Sure, the auger doesn't really have the power to easily cut through hard soil. It doesn't seem to pull the soil to the surface as nicely as commercial models either, so I found myself having to hand dig a little to clear the hole. Yes, it did bog down during the process of digging, while cutting through clay soil, but it was a WHOLE LOT EASIER than digging it by hand with a post hole digger!! You can also buy different size auger bits for various jobs, so I've used this for digging holes for trees and even for starting square trenches. For the cost, it's not a bad machine. It starts up fairly easily and the weight is reasonable and managable for a single person. Overall, if you are going to be using this for commercial application or plan to do a lot of fences or tree holes, buy a commercial model. But if you are a homeowner just looking to make the occasional job around the yard a little easier, this machine will do the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big bang for the buck Bought this a year ago to do 2 miles of barbed wire fencing...2-4 feet deep in hard Colorado clay. I have to soak the holes with water, but this eventually gets the job done. My neighbor's 70 hp tractor auger even struggles in the clay. I have about 150 hours on it so far and the only maintenance I've done is change the spark plug once. I've said to friends I've already got my money's worth and I would buy another one today if it broke! Still going strong though...about half way done with holes.

I have to mention that the main bolt that holds the bit to the engine, was missing the critical nut that held it together. The nut was no where in the packaging. Required another trip to the hardware store. But eventually worked fine. Someone who doesn't live close to a hardware store would not be so happy.

Under NO circumstances should you use the auger without two people holding it. Even then, if you run into something ( a rock, etc) you may both be pulled around by the force. Best for easy soils.
