Questions & Answers

Do I need a separate connection to the phone and internet lines or does this just connect to the ...

Asked by Lori April 18, 2018

The bottom part of the unit has a separate module with input and output connections for coax (television), telephone and ethernet. You don't need the ethernet connection if the coax carries both your cable and internet signals as is the case with Verizon FIOS. If your telephone and cable TV/internet cables run near the panel this should be relatively simple, but I'm guessing they are not if your electrician said he could not connect those lines to the panel. In that case you would need separate surge protectors on the telephone and cable/internet lines for complete protection.

will this unit work with any breaker panel or only square D?

Asked by sparky March 20, 2018

Yes, this unit will work on any breaker panel brand.

Where are the modules for Cable and Ethernet that snap in? Are they included or extra cost access...

Asked by RKings February 17, 2017

They are included. It's the APC module you see in picture.

How close does this need to be mounted to the panel?

Asked by Moose September 2, 2015

This needs to be mounted directly to the main panel. It's all about an easy path to the grounding rod! More resistance + more hazard.

Can this unit be attached directly to the bus bars, or must it be connected through a breaker?

Asked by CuriousHomeowner June 20, 2017

must be connected through breakers as the instructions state

My panel is on the exterior of my home. Can this be installed on the exterior?

Asked by Wally March 21, 2018

What happens if this device absorbs a large surge? Does it need to be replaced?

Asked by James November 18, 2018

There are two LEDs on the HEDP80 that will illuminate. These LEDs are located on the front of the device along with the note regarding the Status of the LEDs. When both LEDs are green, the surge protector is operating and OK. If one or both of the LEDs are dark or not illuminated, it indicates the device is not operating and will need to be replaced. ***NOTE*** The LEDs are recessed enough, that it could appear they are not illuminated, especially during daylight hours when outside or in a bright room. If you cup your hands around the LED area or wait for darkness etc... you will then be able to clearly see if the LEDs are lit. Please review document 8291-0201A available on internet for operating status of LED indicators. The HEPD80 works together with surge protection plug strips to provide surge suppression for sensitive electronics. HEPDs reduce surges that might otherwise overwhelm plug strips and damage connected household equipment. HEPD80 also provide surge suppression for important items such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, and lighting that plug strips don't protect. is for protection for electrical only. Asked by Oldtechy June 16, 2018

The HEPD80 considered a Whole House SPD device. It is designed to deliver superior AC surge protection for the entire AC power system in a home. HEPDs are compact in size and are designed to protect AC wires in the home from surges that could affect home electronics and appliances not connected to surge strips. This is also the replacement device for the SDSB80111 Whole House Surgebreaker Plus. It however, does not include Telephone, Video, nor Network protection technology. SDSB80111 Sophisticated surge protective device that protects your entire home, including cable, ethernet & telephone lines. This device provides an 80 kA surge current rating per phase. 5 Year Warranty - $100,000 downstream equipment protection. Regards, Customer Care

what do I do if my breaker box does not any place for a additional breaker

Asked by Bill June 20, 2019

This will not work for you. You must have two open breaker positions to protect your electrical service. A qualified electrician should be able to upgrade your service which will need to be done if you intend to add on to your home or add many more electrical appliances.

Enclousure Box Not needed for most situations
I bought a unit several years ago, thinking that if the surge protector goes, a new one can be easily replaced inside the box. The box looked a little different compared to this one but it was basically the same. Now, I need a new surge protector. This company no longer makes a replacement surge protector that will fit inside the box . The box is trash, since the indicator light panel will not line up with the new version of the HEPD80 indicator light. The enclosure box is not needed, just buy your Surge Protector separately and save some money!

Hello Larry,
The HEPD80 carries a NEMA 4X enclosure rating, suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation. It does not need to have its own enclosure.

I'm using this surge protector from last 3 weeks. My electrician installed it in like 45 minutes; he seemed very impressed by it's quality. Our electric panel is of SQUARE D, too.
