About This Product

Square D by Schneider Electric Homeline 20 Amp 1-pole Dual Function Circuit Breaker is a space and labor saving device, engineered to meet prevailing National Electric Code requirements. This device combines 2 critical technologies; Combination Arc Fault protection and ground fault protection (class A) in a single, easy-to-install device. The National Electric Code now requires both Combination Arc Fault and ground fault protection on all 1-Pole, 15 Amp and 20 Amp kitchen and laundry circuits. Prior to the release of this new device, a contractor or homeowners only choice would have been to use a Combination Arc Fault circuit breaker in conjunction with an expensive, bulky ground fault receptacle. The new dual function circuit breakers help reduce cost and eliminate the hassle of using 2 separate devices to provide this essential protection. It's a win for contractors and homeowners alike. Like all Square D CAFI circuit breakers, it is integrated with time saver diagnostics, a unique feature that provides additional circuit information and minimizes troubleshooting at the touch of a button.

Q:Do I need to have a GFCI receptacle for my washing machine if I am using a Homeline combination AFCI breaker?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi, CAFI breakers include the combination of both parallel and series arc fault protection, which helps to protect against fire hazards caused by arcing in damaged electrical wiring (UL1699 Combination AFCI). They have a white test button, so, if the washing machine needs to be gfi protection, yes you can include the GFI receptacle or Dual Function Breaker. GFI breakers include 5 mA ground fault protection, which helps to protect people from being seriously injured if electricity should flow through their body to ground (UL943 Class A GFCI). They have a yellow test button. DF breakers include the dual protection of both of the above, GFI and CAFI, in one device. They have a purple test button. Regards, Schneider Electric Customer Care

A:  Yes the washer has to be gfci protected. You can use a dual function AFCI/GFCI breaker or if you already have a combination AFCI breaker installed you will need a GFCI receptacle. The receptacle has to be readily accessible and not down behind the washer.

A:  Hello, Downstream, Square D does not limit the number of outlets that can be connected to one circuit. We would advise you to check with local codes. I'm using these for all my 20 amp circuits. Although both arc fault and ground fault (GFCI) protection are not required for all circuits, this saves me from having to second guess code. It also makes the electrical inspector's job easier when she sees a panel with only purple buttons. For circuits that do require GFCI protection there is no need for a GFCI outlet.

I have several Square D breaker panels in our home. I like these panels and breakers in the same way I like Ford vehicles. The debate rages regarding the best brand. I have strong brand preference for lots of stuff. For electrical, I like Square D. These breakers are an upgrade from standard breakers that were used for years. Some home fires are linked to electrical causes. I installed these breakers because with them I feel my electrical system is as safe as it can be.
