Can a surge suppressor be attached to this?

Yes and no. NO: There is insufficient space inside the box to make an additional connection to a surge suppression device. YES: Surge suppression is a very advanced engineering problem. The best way to protect the equipment is to have a 2 prong approach, specifically: a) protection next to the supply (i.e. at the main panel); and b) protection next to the load (i.e. the equipment being protected). The best way to envision electrical surge events is to related it to a whip. Stop movement at the handle and stop movement at the end of the whip. Both points need to be controlled to stop the surge damage. You would be better served placing a surge suppressor right at the load (i.e. the end of the whip) instead of the disconnect which is in the middle of the whip.

Hard seal and maintain accessability.
I have used this device in three different application. Pros: It has a switchable disconnect that is easy to cycle and will not fall apart after 2 or 3 uses. Good value. Cons: Tight wiring clearances. It is hard to access the interior wiring if you seal the exterior surfaces. No top side wiring option.

Very easy to assemble. They only problem is that it was quite visible it was used because it had metal scraped off on the edges an you could see the iron rust color. Aside from that it worked perfect so no complaints.
