You do need a very good 12" saw that cuts straight. They usually start in the $300-$600.

Yes. If nothing was on the tread before, the top riser will be just over half an inch shorter. In my case I removed carpet from the steps, so the difference was in-perceivable.

Great quality hard wood and easy to work with. Unfinished surface does not need much prepping for staining and final clear coat.

Multiple split boards
Since installment (August ‘19) three boards have split. I anticipate remaining three stair treads to follow suit in no time. Severely disappointed with product.

This is one of at least 7 stairs that I will be returning due to imperfections in the wood that do not show up until you apply polyurethane. The pieces that were unblemished are fine and I like the product overall. I'm on my fourth order to hopefully receive unblemished treads.

Overall, this is clearly a very well-engineered, high-quality product, made with top-grade white oak boards assembled and milled with precision. However, I was disappointed that out of the 13 pieces I originally ordered, four had what I would consider defects in the form of wood filler on their otherwise-perfect nosing (front edge). It wouldn't matter if these were treads meant to be painted or covered in some other way, but when the whole point is to highlight the beautiful oak grain, crescents or seams of wood filler in such a prominent place are going to stand out. It's tone-matched and skillfully applied wood filler, but wood filler just the same. I returned the four and ordered four more, of which one had the same problem. I ordered two more, and of those two, one allowed me to finish the project (and two will be going back). I'm sure that milling the nosing with its perfectly rounded shape is a tricky and unpredictable procedure with hardwoods, and it's expensive to throw away a tread every time it creates or uncovers voids in the grain, simply by virtue of it being wood. But I'd be inclined to pay a little more if I could be guaranteed every tread had been carefully inspected and was certified to be free of wood filler so I can just keep going on my project. If you're in need of retreads, you will be impressed by the beauty and quality of the good pieces, but be aware that you might have to swap out some that (for my taste, at least) shouldn't have passed inspection.
