I am attaching a 2 x 4 to a concrete block wall using 1/4" x 2-3/4" Tapcons and a 3/16" masonry bit. What size bit should I use for the pilot hole through the 2x4?
Asked by: Bill
To begin with ... your Tapcon is probably 1 to 1.5" " too short ... the hole in wood should be same as Tapcon or JUST a smidgen smaller ... ideally you'll have your lumber CLAMPED to the wall ... have it just a bit thread in the wood would help to drive it into the cement (i'm thinking 13/64 or 7/32 ... 3/16 might be too tight). Your biggest challenge is going to be alignment (2 different bits ... holes perfectly aligned). Suggest you drill wood first with 3/16" ... marking the spot in the concrete ... ANGLE of your hole need be the same (most easily accomplished by drilling hole into concrete THRU the hole in the wood (think of a circle ,,, 360 degrees of potential error) any deviation in angle between the holes will cause the Tapcon to bore at an offset angle and your hole will be ruined.

I am looking to re-locate my wall mount TV from a wall with wood studs to a concrete wall. Will these screws work to hold up a 42" flat screen TV? What size would be recommended (length wise) Many thanks -
Asked by: Fasbo
yes, Length depends on the thickness of drywall and strips between mounting surface and concrete but typically 2 1/4" will work

Using to anchor hold downs for my driveway gate rail. Used their pro install kit and their drill bit in the size they recommended. Three screws later, two barely made it in, and the third is stuck in the hole and the install kit is stripped. Less than useless, as now I have a screw sticking out of my driveway...

The Tapcon drill bits bored easily into soft brick. ADVICE: If you are drilling into soft masonry (like old interior brick), use a regular drill instead of a hammer-drill. I needed to fasten a surface-mount receptacle-box to brick that is covered by plaster and lathe. I used a hammer-drill to bore 4" x 3/16" holes through the plaster and into the brick. Then I tried to thread 4" x 1/4" Tapcon masonry screws into the brick. PROBLEM: The 4" x 1/4" Tapcon screws did not bite into the brick, because the hammer-drill (with 3/16" bit) bored 1/4" holes instead of 3/16" holes. A hammer-drill tends to pulverize soft masonry. SOLUTION: I used a regular drill to bore 5" x 3/16" holes through the existing holes. Then I successfully threaded 5" x 1/4" Tapcon masonry screws into the brick. ADVICE: If you are drilling into soft masonry (like old interior brick), use a regular drill instead of a hammer-drill.

Tried to use these on my basement remodel project involving OSB and DMX membrane for a subfloor into concrete slab. I had a perimeter drain installed a few years ago that these screws went into without issue. When I moved to the older concrete from 62' I have had three break and around 60% strip out rendering the hole worthless. Extremely frustrating since the rest of the project requires the subfloor to be completed. I called tapcon yesterday and they mentioned not using a impact drill with these. Tried that today with no difference in performance of these screws. I wish there was another better quality screw out there other than Tapcon because these are worthless when working with older concrete as others have stated. I have tried using Dewalt 18 v impact driver slow/fast, Dewalt 20 v impact driver/slow fast, and Dewalt 20 v drill on various settings all with no luck. I have used compressed air to clean the hole, shop vac, ran the drill into the hole to clean...etc nothing has been consistent with making these screws work.
