Questions & Answers

What size and type of drill bit?

What type and size drill bit do I need to purchase to install Tapcon 3/16 in x 1-3/4 concrete anchors?
Asked by: windsor1961
5/32" masonry drill but. Hammer drills work best but the store sells regular "smooth shank" masonry bits that can be used in a regular drill.

Make sure you pre-drill with the correct bit(masonry bit, with a hammer drill) then just drill it in. Worked extremely well in a concrete block. I haven't used it in bricks before. Make sure you remove as much dust as you can. I used a one holed conduit strap and its holding up very nicely, even with the tenant's kids trying to jump on it and walking on it against the wall.

But drilling the right size hole is sometimes tricky. You always have to drill deep enough which is not the problem. Sometimes your concrete doesn't cooperate with the recommended bit size. I always start with a size smaller and test the Tapcon. If needed, I go to the next larger size. If it is too large, it will not hold strongly. If it is too small, you won't be able to screw it all the way in. I do prefer the heads that you can use a wrench on instead of a screw driver so you can put more torque on it when tightening. All that said, I will continue to use these whenever I need to anchor in my concrete walls.
