Questions & Answers

Are these suitable for screwing 1 1/8" plywood into 10 gauge galvanized steel floor joists? Seems really tight, but I can't find a slightly longer option.

Answer This Question

Hi there - thank you for contacting us. These screws are not suitable. Fastening 1-7/8" plywood requires longer screws to ensure adequate thread engagement in the steel. Please feel free to call us at (800)222-6990 or email us at teks@itwbrands.com, if you have any questions

Can these screws be used to fasten marine grade plywood to an aluminum pontoon deck frame?

        Answer This Question

Hi there - thank you for contacting us. Unfortunately, no, a zinc-plated steel sleeve anchor is not recommended for outdoor use because it is designed for dry, indoor applications and will rust over time. For outdoor use, you should use a sleeve anchor made of stainless steel, which is corrosion resistant. Please feel free to call us at (800)222-6990 or email us at teks@itwbrands.com, if you have any questions.

Can these be used to hang a tv bracket to a structural aluminum post? The bracket requires two screws and the TV weighs under 100lbs (I think it’s like 65 lbs)

            Answer This Question

Hi there - thank you for contacting us. No, the Teks self-tapping screws with wings are not suitable for mounting a TV bracket to a structural aluminum post because they are designed for wood or other soft materials, and the attachment method for aluminum is different from how these screws function. Please feel free to call us at (800)222-6990 or email us at teks@itwbrands.com, if you have any questions.

Hello Julie, unfortunately, there are so many factors that come into play when selecting a fastener for a specific fastening situation that we cannot as a company give you a specific screw to use. If a specific specification needs to be reached it is better to consult someone with local code knowledge like an architect or engineer.

Amazing structural screws. Exactly what I needed to get the job done. I was mounting a floating vanity onto the wall and I needed to add structural support beams in the wall, behind the drywall, so I used these screws to secure the vanity into those support beams and when I tell you the vanity doesn't move a hair... I mean the vanity doesn't move a hair! It feels rock solid on the wall with no possibility of coming down. Again, exactly what I needed to get the job done. Will buy again no questions asked.

Hi there - thank you for sharing your positive experience with our Teks Screws. We work hard to make sure our products are well designed.
                    Teks Self-Drilling Screws FAILED MISERABLY
I recently purchased 2 (40) count boxes of # 12 TEKS Wood to Metal screws from my local Home Depot. I found this product online but was delighted to find that it was available and in stock at my local Home Depot. I wanted to re-secure some replacement boards on my gooseneck trailer, which has been converted into a 40 foot bridge over a seasonal creek on my rural property. I also purchased required the 2x6 pressure treated boards at the same Home Depot and was happily on my way to fix my trailer – bridge.. I prepped my trailer Bridge by removing all the broken boards, the old fasteners were so strong that I had to cut the old boards off from the trailer bridge, and I actually had to grind/cut off the old fasteners from the trailer because the old fastener screws were so rusted in place that I could not remove them even after applying rust cutting solvents. Once the project was ready for the new wood, I cut my new pressure treated boards to fit the openings and all that remained was to fasten the boards in place with the TEKS #12 Self-Drilling Wood to Metal screws. But I could not complete the work because the TEKS #12 Sel-Drilling Wood to Metal Screws failed. They easily went through the 2 x 6 pressure treated wood boards, but could not effectively penetrate the under lying metal cross members that support the boards. are NOT self-tapping screws and are too light of a screw brand for a commercial trailer usage. The TEKS screw bow contained instructions, which I read, warning overdriving the TEKS #12 Self-Drilling Wood to Metal Screws to prevent “torsional failure’ or “stripout of substrate”. So, I started the installation with a variable speed 4.0amp a battery powered Brushless Rigid Drill but it failed; then I tried a Rigid Battery powered Drill Driver (4.0amp) but it failed as well; and finally I tried a 1/2" Rigid Torque variable speed 6.0amp battery powered wrench to attempt to fasten the boards to the trailer. Which also failed. The portion of the screw that remains in the wood was not sufficient to hold the screw in position to even penetrate the metal cross members not matter what Rigid drill or driver I used. Unfortunately, nothing I tried worked. I flat out broke 3 of the #12 TEKS Self-Drilling Wood to Metal 2 and ¾ inch screws. I also snapped one off after it started to cut into the crossmember. I wore out and dulled 8 of these screws to fully rounded cutting edges. However, I finally got one installed, ONLY after drilling an 1/8-inch pilot hole in the treated 2x6 planks and then the steel cross bracing. But I broke 2 more while attempting to fasten the one board, even after the pre-drilling. Note the TEKS instructions for the product doesn’t recommend or even mention pre-drilling! Your website specifically recommends these screws for use on wood to metal for trailers...they are NOT tough enough for the job I needed. Further note - Home Depot does not carry a Self-Tapping Wood to Metal screw. I will be returning the remaining #12 TEKS Self-Drilling 2 ¾” Wood to Metal screws.

These were what I needed to attach 2x3 studs, with liquid nails, to the corregated surface of a shipping container so we could skin it with plywood for a smooth surface.

                      Still a Workout!
Went through 3/16” channel trailer frame, require good amount of force/body weight, (190lbs), pre drilling 2X8 PT lumber helps, IMO no time savings over drilling steel and using self tappers, benefit is cost savings and availability, still a lot of work.

Perfect for attaching 2x wood material to steel framing
I used these self-drilling, self-tapping screws to replace the pressure-treated pine decking on my hauler. The hauler uses 3/16" thick steel for its frame. These screws are coated and rated for exposure to the chemicals in pressure-treated wood so they won't corrode as most fasteners do in that application. I used a cordless drill/driver to install the screws, and every screw worked perfectly, drilling first through the wood, then the steel, and then tapping its own threads in the steel. Couldn't be easier or simpler. And of course these screws are intended to also self-countersink, leaving a completely smooth finished surface which is necessary on a trailer deck.
