Q:I'm making a hanging plant rod that's 10" from the wall and spans 6' wide. Are these pipes sturdy enough to use without a center support - or should I do two 3' pipes with a center support and t-connector? Will likely have 3-5 plants hanging on the bar.

I've been doing a lot of woodworking lately and realized I needed a better assortment of large clamps. I found these universal clamps online that only require a 1/2 in. threaded pipe. The longer the pipe, the bigger the clamp. PERFECT. I saw these pipes on Home Depot's site and ordered a 36 in., 48 in., 60 in. and a 72 in. The pipes came wrapped in plastic with no other protection but the threads were well protected with plastic caps. These are galvanized so they should weather well.

Cost effective for pipe clamps. Steel pipes have a number of top uses. Supplying natural gas in buildings, posts for plants, for me - I picked up a nice long pipe, cut it in half and added 2 sets of pipe clamps. This gives me 2x 3 foot pipe clamps. And I enjoy doing wood-working so having something like this in my garage is great. Yesterday I used it to glue together a 25" wide set of boards that I will rip slightly and plane down. The pipe is soft enough that the clamps dig in. They hold their form very well so I don't have to worry about sagging. (I have heard 1/2 inch pipe is okay up to about 10 feet before you need to use 3/4 pipe clamps, but I am not building anything at that scale.) Haven't experienced any slippage, so I am very pleased to have these in my garage.

I used this pipe to make woodworker's pipe clamps. Home Depot carries Bessey H-style pipe clamp fixtures which use various lengths of pipe to make different length clamps. The pipe comes with plastic caps on the threaded ends to protect the threads and is covered with shrink wrap (with multiple wraps on the ends for extra protection for the threads) for protection in shipping. They are available in several different lengths to assemble pipe clamps in several sizes.

The threads on both ends of this six foot length of galvanized pipe were protected well. Pipe of this type may be used for water, natural gas, etc. This pipe is also used for DIY projects. My large compressor is stationary but the hose reel needs to be some distance away. Since it is rated 150 psi, it is used to carry air at pressure up to 135 psi. Rust should not be a problem as it has an advanced protective coating.
