A really great piece of machinery! Gets the job done easily!
Here is my review for Toro's 1 or 2-Person 52 cc 2-Cycle Earth Auger Powerhead with 8 in. Auger Bit. While planning a fence replacement and a hot tub surround, I knew I would need a power auger for the job. I'm done digging holes with the old 2 handled back-breaker! So when I had the chance to pick up Toro's 52cc Powerhead Auger, I did! I have been so impressed with the power and the speed of this tool. Setup was a breeze. Just screw on the fishtail point and fill it with premixed 2 cycle gas. The 1 or 2 person steel handlebar is well thought out and ergonomic. There are two throttle levers. No matter how you use the auger (1 or 2 people) the throttle lever is easy to squeeze. The built in shock absorber at the top of the auger shaft really lessens kickback when you hit a rock or a big root. Toro has designed the 52cc engine to be quick starting and smooth running. The Toro Auger fired right up in 40° weather. Once warmed up, the Toro auger chewed thru our clay soil and produced a perfect 8" by 2 foot deep post hole. Being a 2 stroke I expected a lot of vibration, but Toro has fixed that issue with great design and engineering. The instructions are well written and easy to understand. You can order replacement tips, blades and any other part directly from Toro. The way the handlebar is designed you can lay down the machine at any time and the engine is always protected. In fact, once you drain the gas for storage (As Toro recommends) You can stand it upside down on the handlebars. It takes up almost no room! This is a really great piece of machinery! I can 100% recommend it.
The ground is frozen where I wanted to evaluate the power and efficiency of this Toro 52cc Earth Auger. My neighbors have been eyeing it up in a chance to liberate it to drill holes in the ice for their fishing huts. I’m not crazy about that idea, and really don’t think that it was designed for that alternate purpose. This unit is powered by a 52cc 2-cycle Toro motor. The fuel cell holds 1.13 liters. The ignition is the typical recoil pull start. There is a welded steel wrap-around handle for the operator(s) to obtain a firm grip on the unit. It works as a safety cage for the motor and auxiliary parts as well. The throttle controls are mounted on two different locations on the handlebar to promote optimum hand positioning of the operator. The Auger unit is 8” diameter with a fishtail point. The design is to increase accuracy for posthole placement. It is much friendlier than using the traditional posthole digger. The cutting blades are noted to be replaceable. This feature design is to increase the lifespan of the auger. By specifications, a depth of 36 inches can be obtained with this unit. Under the motor aligned with the drilling shaft is a shock absorbing coil which has been placed to help reduce kickback. The unit also has a centrifugal clutch which is designed to slip when encountering obstructions, to reduce torque force on the operator. The unit is backed by Toro’s 5 year warranty. The owner’s manual is included. There was minimal assembly required out of the box. Adding 2 cycle gas mix (50:1 recommended) to the fuel cell and a few pulls on the cord, it stared right up. The design and operation ease were well thought out. I have experienced numerous field stones where I am currently installing my fencing, and this will be an added safety feature, along with having a second person to help steady the unit. Any volunteers? I wish I had this when I started this job last summer. Unfortunately, I am forced to wait until the ground thaws to give this a thorough workout.
The Toro 1-Person or 2-Person 52 cc 2-Cycle Earth Auger Powerhead with 8 inch Auger Bit is build to last and it is tough. When you have a landscaping job, or need posts in the ground for any reason, this Toro Auger will make your job much easier and quicker. It can be operated by 1 or 2 people, so inexperienced persons can have some help when needed. This auger bit also uses replaceable cutting blades so this tool will be able to perform longer. It has 2 throttle controls mounted on the handlebars for several operating positions. It also has a 5 year limited warranty. This is one handy tool to have around!
After reading all the reviews I was excited about getting this product. And I have to say this is the cats mow. This is a dirt digging hole making machine. Toro got this thing right. It started right up after three pulls and has started every time I've needed it to. I've dug around 20 holes with the soil having 2in. rock and tree roots around the same size. It goes through them like nothing. It has caught a root that stopped it and the torque spring did its job prefectly. The fuel mixer I used was 50 to 1 and it seemed to work wonderfully. I'm very please that I made this purchase. I highly recommend this to anyone that wants a post hole digger. It says it's a one or two man auger which is helpful when you need a second man. It's also a good size for one person if you just need one. The 52cc motor is plenty big enough to dig a 2ft hole. Just need to clear the dirt out ever so often.

Good auger. Does need 2-people for most operations. You might be able to handle it as a single person auger in non-rocky ground. Has good power and makes a nice hole for thicker posts.

Great tool, ready to go. Just need gas!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Everything you expect from Toro. Effective, relatively easy to handle as a single user (6’4” 240lbs), definitely easiest with two people, though. Starts right up out of the box. Comes with oil for premixed fuel. Just need gas in 1 gal container.

It works, but can yank you pretty hard when catching on hard soil, lime-sized rocks, or roots. It stops and needs to be manually lifted to get it to rotate again. And then when it digs lower than 18", does not discard the soil, but must be continually lifted to eject it.

Did the job in a new yard for trellis holes in mostly rock fill. Glad I had two people working the auger, otherwise it would have ripped my arm off! Bottom line-plenty of power for the job. Very happy with the purchase. I’m looking forward to digging fence post holes next but need to figure out what smaller auger sizes will fit the toro.

Great machine
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This machine is a must if you need lots off holes. I needed one to dig holes for fencing and renting one for the number of days needed cost more than purchasing one. What a work horse, I ended up digging holes for 30 trees first. I was really surprised how well it did in my desert soil. Now on to the fencing great machine. Much better than my dog.
