Product Overview

Viagrow Premium Coarse and chunky Vermiculite is a natural soil amendment that promotes moisture retention and aeration in potting mixes and delivers vital elements to the plant roots resulting in better root development, growth rates and yields. Viagrow coarse vermiculite can be mixed with Peat moss, mushroom compost, cactus soil, organic soil, bark, perlite, compost, coconut coir, worm casting, potting soil and just about any soil or soilless media. Viagrow Vermiculite naturally attracts and holds positively charged ions, like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and ammonium, releasing these vital elements to the plant roots. It even contains potassium and magnesium, which are then available as a supplemental slow-release supply of essential nutrients. Coarse Vermiculite is great for container gardens, square foot gardening, raised bed gardens, green house mixes and hydroponic drip systems. Viagrow chunky Vermiculite has been developed with Successful Growing in Mind with a negative charge, it provides an excellent cation-exchange capacity which promotes healthy bacteria in your growing media and attracts and holds positively charged ions, improves water retention, wettability, has pH stability in soilless mixtures and exhibits greater particle strength. For a great soilless mix: combine 30% Viagrow coarse vermiculite with 30% Viagrow perlite VPER1 or VPER4 and 40% Viagrow coconut coir VCCB5 or VCCB650-3. Great growing medium
Horticultural vermiculite is processed with massive heat to expand it into accordion shaped pellets composed of multiple layers of thin plates. It will not rot or deteriorate and is considered sterile. It is similar to perlite, but vermiculite has more water retention properties and contains minerals, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium. It can be used alone or mixed into a soil mixture. It is great to root cuttings, as it will help maintain moisture, while giving some minerals to the newly rooted plant. Being a sterile medium will help to prevent rot or dampening off. This is the perfect size to add to soil in order to keep the mixture airy, preventing compaction which will smother the roots. It holds a good amount of moisture and will release it back slowly into the soil/roots. It can be used alone as a growing medium with the addition of a hydroponic feed. When compared to perlite, it is important to remember that vermiculite has more moisture retention properties. The two can be mixed together to offset the properties of each.

Helps with water retention
I decided to try amending some of my soil with this Viagrow vermiculite. I grow lots of pepper plants, and some types are difficult to grow if the soil dries out too much between waterings in the hot sun. I was using 'cactus mix' soil, which is somewhat light and drains well (probably too well). So I mixed in the vermiculite at about 1:5, and planted my seedlings. Two months later - success! Remember that vermiculite is very good at holding water. It works well on most normal plants, but you don't want to use it for things like cactus and succulents. Viagrow is made in the US, which is important to me because I know that it is tested to be free of contaminants. This chunky-type vermiculite works great in pots, and the chunks hold up to hand mixing with bags of soil. Now that I know it works, I'll be buying more.

Excellent Soil Conditioner
This stuff is amazing. Hard to believe that it is all-natural because it has the texture of Styrofoam but an entirely different look. I mixed it with my gardening soil to make it retain moisture and nutrients. It is very easy to use and this one bag went a long way. The product and bag are very light-weight. Good product for potting or raised beds.

Great Quality
This is very nice quality vermiculite, and very nice to have around, especially if you make your own plant potting mixes. This chunky vermiculite is perfect for adding aeration to your mix while also allowing water and nutrients to be retained. It's not too dusty and won't float its way to the top of the pot (the way perlite often does). Very happy with this product!

Versatile Vermiculite
Viagrow Vermiculite, Course and Chunky (16 Qt./4 Gal./.53 CF) (1-Pack) Our backyard is filled with mostly compacted clay-like soil. We found just breaking it up is not enough, especially at this time of drought. Vermiculite was recommended to mix into our soil to help aerate it, help retain moisture and nutrition. It will help improve the soil structure. In fact vermiculite itself can be used as a growing medium. I learned from a neighbor that vermiculite can be used when arranging flowers. Fill a vase with vermiculite that has been saturated with water, and arrange the flowers. She says you do not need to change the water, and it keeps the flowers fresh for days, as long as you use horticultural vermiculite .

Great soil conditioner
The 4 Gal. course and chunky vermiculite by Viagrow is easy to use and it helps retaining the moisture and improving aeration in my planter. The vermiculite can be used to germinate seeds or used as soil conditioner. I mixed it with garden soil for my new passion fruit plant and I look forward to seeing great results. I like that It helps the recent tight water rationing requirements in California and saves water. On the package it shows a 4 Gal. pack but I measured only 3 Gal. For the price, it is a bit expensive.

Soil Enricher
I received this bag of Vermiculite and put it to work right away in my raised and veggie garden containers. After about a week, I noticed that it was good at moisture retention so much so that I cut my watering in half. I do not know yet the impact on the plants and vegetables as it relates to aiding them with growth and development. The vermiculite fits the description, very coarse and chunky, spreading very well on top of the soil There are several ways that it may be used but I chose to layer on the top of the garden soil to retain moisture. If you are an avid gardener, I would recommend it.

Easy to Use, Light Weight, Thick Chunky Pieces
This is great to use in the ground if you have thick clay or hard packed muddy soils that stay too moist. It breaks up the consistency of the soil and opens up air spaces to allow it to dry, drain and allow roots to grow and not suffocate. Great for wet areas and pots that don't drain water fast enough. This would also work well in very large planters and raised beds. It may be too big for small pots and containers. Each chunk is over 1/4" in size. The color is a nice natural brown/tan so it blends in fine. A nice soil amendment and one bag will cover a few hundred square feet of surface and then can be tilled or raked under the soil. You must mix this into the soil, do not leave it on the top.

Good features, but wrong weight and measures
Even though I have been a backyard gardener for my whole life, this is the first time I am testing out Vermiculite. So I just believe what a professional gardening company like Viagrow claims about their product. I am planning to test out this for my soilless indoor gardening and seed starting. The test results will take time to know the accuracy of the claims, so I am planning to do another review later in a few months. Hope everything will come out okay. One thing I am really concerned about was the wrong weight and measures of the product. The bag says that it weighs 3 lbs and measures 4 gallons, but it weighs only 2 lbs and measures about half of a 5-gallon bucket, which is about 2.5 gallons. I also think that the price is too high for this product.

Viagrow Vermiculite, Course and Chunky
The Viagrow Vermiculite is a natural soil amendment that promotes moisture retention and aeration and look great compared to other products I have purchased in the past. I have repotted some of my plants to attempt to save them and with no stretch of the imagination, I can now grow plants and some vegetables. This is part of my new planting mixture going forward with my plants. This is a great addition to any potting soil. The water retention and pH stability with the addition of the release of potassium, magnesium, calcium, and ammonium, releasing these vital elements to the plant roots from the vermiculite are what I have been missing with other products, this will improve with the growth mixture that I use and should assist any gardener with the planting issues.
