If purchasing this hardwood round dowel, is it possible to cut this into 8" or 9" units? Also, once this dowel is cut into such units, is it possible to dip these into a rubber paint? I wanted to use these for musical handbells.
Asked by: Speedy
Yes but shorter dowels would be more economical. As for rubber paint its hardwood so maybe a first coat of something that would make the rubber stick would help. I would certainly rough sand the dowel.

Customer Reviews

1-1/4 in. x 72 in. Hardwood Round Dowel is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong, smooth, easy enough to cut. Standard closet rod sized dowel which holds a lot of weight as long as you support it if you are spanning wider than 48". Great quiet closet rod; metal hangers don't make grating or scratching noises like they do over a metal rod. The sticky label is a pain in the back side to remove (it shreds into tiny ribbons and leaves a very sticky glue behind). You'll need to sand it off, for sure. Minus one star for cheap and bad labeling. If you have this mailed, be ready for frustration. It is mailed in a super heavy-duty pressed cardboard tube with a 1" thick disc of wood nailed into each end. You cannot pull the nails out with a hammer or pliers (head is too small and too deep), and the paper tube is too tough to hammer or cut through without a saw. If you have a table saw or hack saw, that would be your best choice. It took 15 minutes to get one end open without a proper saw.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good I was worried about it being warped since unlike in store purchases, I wouldn't be able to compare poles to choose the straightest one before purchase. I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up packaged well and straight. I only have two complaints. The one end painted dark green. It didn't mention or show this on the website. I was a bit disappointed, natural ends would of been much better for my project. The second thing is the label. It was stuck to the pole, and impossible to remove without lots of sanding. Left a very sticky residue behind that had to be completely removed before staining. A big pain in the............ (flagged as inappropriate, so use your imagination) ;~) They could of made the label easier to remove. Overall however, Its a good deal for the price and arrived fast. I couldn't find the exact dimensions I needed in any hardware store. I'm glad they have this selection online.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not truly 1 1/4. More like 1 1/8. There was... Not truly 1 1/4. More like 1 1/8. There was also a rough ridge running down the both sides of each dowel that had to be sanded down. I can see why HD does not sell these in store. Only online. Did not meet my needs but had to use anyway. Would not buy again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sanded and used for a bo staff for martial arts.... Sanded and used for a bo staff for martial arts. Piece I received was nice and straight. A little sanding and oil and saved myself some money and it looks better and functions better than if I just bought one for about 6x the cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not oak I found the dowel rods to be straight, smooth, and fairly stiff. They fit my needs very well. They are not made of Oak however as they are described.

They were not straight- both were curved. Additionally, as I know that a standard lumber size 2 x 4 is not actually a 2 x 4 but measures less, I looked everywhere on the product pages to see if these dowels were actually less than 1- 1/4 inches in diameter. Nothing but 1 -1/4 inches is indicated anywhere. Beware, these dowels are less than 1-1/4 inches in diameter. I would only recommend this product if the project you're using them for will allow for the measurement deficit.
