The purpose of this guy is twofold. First, it acts as a back-flow preventer when pumping liquid such as water from a wet source to another destination. I am using it to both pump old water out of a large koi pond and add fresh water back to the pond which I collect from a fresh water spring also using this valve, sturdy garden hose and a transfer pump into a large water transport tank.
So this valve helps hold prime on the transfer pump because it opens when there is suction on the line and closes when the suction stops preventing the water from draining back down the hose and causing the pump to lose prime. The perforated cover also prevents small debris from entering with the water.
Works well. Does exactly what it is supposed to do.

The end screw that holds the filter screen on is too long. It prevented the valve from closing. I fixed it by putting three SS washers under the screw head.

Cistern Water Filtration
Online I saw people selling hoses with this foot valve with a float from 300$-$500 by apparently rainwater harvesters. I bought a toilet float this foot valve and a hose for less than 100$. The thread on the foot valve I received was not threaded for garden hose as expected but we made it work. We use it as one step in an overall filtration system for a cistern 200gal tank with a Flojet pump and an instant hot water heater for an outdoor shower.
