Q:What size finishing nails do we need to use for this board. Please recommend to buy in home depot itself.

Answer This Question

A:  Hi Bala, I've used this base moulding throughout our house and I've found that since it is not sensitive to warping and holds its' shape really well that my general rule of thumb is to use the smallest finishing nail I can to attach it. Typically, that would be a 4d to 8d finishing nail long enough to give a solid attachment the the wall or door you are are securing it to. Two things to remember, 1.) if you think there is a chance of splitting the moulding, pre-drill a small pilot hole and 2.) always counter sink the nail just enough to allow for some caulking to give it a nice, smooth finish once completed.

A:  I used 1 1/4" brad nails, used a nail gun. If using a hammer I would pre-drill holes first and use any of the following https://www.homedepot.com/p/Grip-Rite-15-x-1-1-2-in-4-Penny-Bright-Steel-Nails-1-lb-Pack-4F1/202308472, https://www.homedepot.com/p/Grip-Rite-15-1-2-x-1-1-4-in-3-Penny-Bright-Steel-Nails-1-lb-Pack-3F1/100186161, or https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-1-2-in-Stainless-Finishing-Nails-50-Pack-03524/203436053

Q:I have them already installed as baseboards in my garage. Now, I painted the white walls half-way from the floor with darker paint and wanted to use a matching trim (sort of chair rails but higher from the floor) to cover the line when the 2 colors meet. Would this same baseboard trim installed 5 ft from the floor make sense or - if not - which one will go well with the existing WM 623 31/4" base moulding?

      Answer This Question

A:  No it's doesn't make sense because the shape of the baseboard (flat and wide bottom with narrow top) will make it stick out. You want a molding with a C-shaped profile.

      by|Dec 18, 2020

A:  Hi bravesfan, Yes, you could use the base trim but it will not look right. There are several good choices for chair rail moulding at HD that will look better and give the whole area a better finish. Try that instead. I think you will agree when you see it on the wall.

Q:what do I put between 2 pieces meeting each other linearly? wood glue?

        Answer This Question

A:  You may cut each end 45 degree and apply small amount of wood glue upon installation. I did 60/30 degrees on my project to minimize the gap line. Either way it will work since you will apply filler on it to hide the gap.

        by|May 6, 2020

A:  I recommend paintable caulk because it allows each plank to move independently with changes in humidity and will not crack like a hard glue could do. Chalk also enables you to smooth out the seam and hide it completely.

          by|May 2, 2020

A:  You can use wood glue or construction adhesive. I used construction adhesive instead of nails and it looks great! So when I had to attach another piece, I just put some on the end. It's white and can also take the place of caulk when hiding the line where the 2 pieces join.

          by|May 2, 2020

            A:  I used white caulking

            by|May 6, 2020

A:  They are both cut at a 45 ° angle ... and nailed as close to the cut as possible ... that cut will present a very smooth transition.

              by|May 2, 2020

A:  You cut the ends at 45, and nail the second piece on top of the first one, no need of glue.

A:  Hi diyjim, The sections of this fine product that I have indicate the wood is a product of Chile but it doesn't indicate where it was assembled. My guess is the U.S. Hope this helps.

                  by|Apr 13, 2020

A:  Not sure, but they're well made and very straight. They're painted with white primer, easy to topcoat with whatever paint you're going to use. I paint them first before installing them, and then fill any nail holes or gaps with filler, then touch up those areas with more paint. I'm guessing they're made in America since they're something like hemlock or fir, and made very nicely. No sloppy joints or anything.

                    Needs Sanding
The price is hard to beat but I wasn't expecting to have to sand every single piece of trim before painting them.

                      Great base boards
These boards are great because of the value and appearance. Some of the boards were not entirely straight so we did have some trouble getting them flat as possible. But overall they were good .

                        Quality control
At least 5 out of 10 pieces had issues. Material is assembled out of smaller sections (picture 1). These sections vary enough in quality that differences impact paint application, adherence to wall (picture2) and appearance (picture 3). In other words the lower price is offset by need for 30% more material/labor just to do the job.

                          If ordering online, order extra
I had to purchase online since the stores were out of stock of the primed pine finger-joint base moulding. I ordered 15 pcs. They arrived nicely packaged in a box. I assumed since the packaging was in great condition that the contents would be as well. I drove 2 hours to my jobsite and 8 of the 15 pieces had manufacturing defects. I have to return them and reorder. I am disappointed that I still cannot finish this project and have to wait for another shipment. The other 7 looked great and we love the look and size of this baseboard moulding.

I have used this Woodgrain Millwork base moulding in other rooms before and have bought more for continuing updating projects. It is easy to work with, cuts easily and looks great. It comes primed for painting. My only issue is that the contractor pack in 120 inch lengths is the only available choice in stores. For additional need, this has to be ordered online in packs of five at ninety six inch lengths.
