How does doorbell work
BySep 8, 2025

Answer This Question

Thanks for asking, Nanette. The Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen) works by connecting to your already existing system. Once it has been installed, you’ll be able to see your doorbell’s live video stream in the Google Home app, speak to visitors with your phone and the doorbell’s microphone, and get notifications to your phone when something happens. Here’s a guide on how to get started with the doorbell: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9249772

Is there any way to change the type of notification when someone rings the doorbell to differentiate a doorbell ring vs motion/person detection/etc? When someone rings my Ring doorbell, the alert is different so I know someone is at my door

Great question, Mary. With the Nest doorbell wired 2nd gen you get up to 3 hours of event video history without a subscription. Which gives you photo snapshots of detected activity up to 3 hours in the past. When you have Nest Aware, you get up to 30 days of event video history. Hey there, Rocio Mendoza. Sorry to hear your Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) has become blurry over time. Your device can accumulate dust, pollen, water spots, and other debris from its surroundings. Clean the lens and body with a soft, lint-free cloth and compressed air for dust. For spots, lightly moisten a cloth with water or lens cleaner and gently wipe. Dry with a soft cloth to avoid spots.

Good doorbell. Good image and audio quality.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It did take me some time to set up but, but works well. I am biased as I'm a long-time Google guy. The instructions are quite clear, my issue was getting to my chime which elevated. Otherwise, installation was easy, plus free cloud storage (but limited time), and good image quality (and audio). It's a win, especially since I'm DEEP in the Google ecosystem.

                      Not as good but ok.
The 1st gen camera was noticeably better. I preferred the wide angle of gen 1 so I could see up and down the street. Also, the image on gen 2 is blurry in some areas and the colors just don't look right. I'm thinking about shopping around for another solution cause $180 is just too much for this level of quality.

Response from Nest SupportOct 28, 2023
Hello there, Mboogie. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) didn’t meet your expectations. Unlike some other video doorbells, Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) has a 145° diagonal field of view at 3:4 aspect ratio. It is intended so you can see people from head to toe, and packages left on the ground. If your doorbell’s video looks bad, but it has a good Wi-Fi connection and is not exposed to direct sunlight, this can happen if the device gets too hot or too cold, and can be avoided by these:
                      - Avoid placing your camera near objects that can cause overheating like light bulbs, lamps, large equipment/appliances, air vents, etc. Your doorbell needs good air circulation. Never install it in any kind of small box or enclosure as this can cause overheating.
                      - Your doorbell’s video might also have a pink, blue or purple hue if there's a problem with the Night vision. Visit the Google Nest Help Center to learn more about the night vision video quality: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9259738

Also, a range issue or wireless interference can affect the performance of your display. It can pass the connection test during setup, but will struggle to stay connected if it’s just a bit too far away. You may also check for objects such as mirrors and refrigerators between the display and your router as these items could block the connection. Google Nest Doorbell (wired-2nd gen.)
This 2nd gen doorbell is small than the 1st gen Nest Hello, but I found the overall performance of the 2nd gen not as good as the first. Installation was easy for me because I already had one installed. The color and profile of this 2nd gen is very nice, however the Google Home app needs a serious redesign. The Nest app for the 1st gen Nest Hello was better, so was the Nest Aware subscription. I have other Nest products. Google will have to improve to keep me buying their products.

Hi there, Aaron. Thanks for sharing your insights with us. We're sorry to hear that the overall performance of Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen), including the Google Home app, didn't quite meet your expectations after comparing your experience with your older Nest doorbell and the Nest app.

We wanted to make the Google Home app as the one place where you can control all your favorite Nest devices and other smart home devices with the Google Assistant. Here are some benefits you can get by using the Google Home app with your Nest doorbell:
                          - Automatic security protections such as Suspicious activity detection, 2-Step Verification and Security Checkup.
                          - Your Google Nest devices and services will work together. For example, if you have a Nest doorbell and a Nest Hub, you can get visitor announcements whenever someone rings your Nest doorbell.
                          - One account to sign into both the Nest and Google Home apps.
                          - Your homes and home members will be aligned across the Nest and Google Home apps.

We'd like to assist you with any other issues you may be having with Nest Doorbell (Wired, 2nd Gen). Our support team would be happy to help check on it and even walk you through some of the features. To contact us, simply visit us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

                            Nest DoorBell
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I got my Nest Doorbell and was very excited to install it. I was impressed with the packaging and product boxing. You can tell Nest puts importance on their brand appearance and marketing. I opened the box and removed the product and all the information in the box. I product is very nice looking and the directions are simple and easy to follow. I removed my current wired doorbell and followed the installation and set up guide provided. I might also add I am not a pro and not a rookie in the home maintenance department. I would consider myself a solid medium when it comes to home repair skills. I feel like this is something even with a very minimal amount of maintenance skills can handle. I installed the doorbell and downloaded the app. Simple set up and it is working. Easy to do and the image is perfect. I would recommend if you are looking for a product like this.

The 2 wires in the chime box I just added to screws with existing wires. I used the bracket with tilt and easy wiring attachment. The video is Sharp in the day and night as well as the mic/sound. Doorbell works great and I love it’s sleek design. This is My favorite looking doorbell and so far works great. I highly recommended

                                Great Next Gen Doorbell!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just got this Google Nest Doorbell v.2 and it works really well. I was able to install it pretty quickly after removing my old door bell. The instructions were concise and I was able to follow. However, I did also look up and watch the video that Google has up to help with the installation which was very informative and made the installation go much smoother. The Google video quality is very good, I am able to clearly see everyone's faces even as they are walking up to my porch. I also tested the sound quality and it was clear. I was able to hear the person outside and they were able to hear me. Google face recognition does need a little bit more work. Sometimes it announces the wrong person, but not often. Overall, it's a great doorbell.
