However, the metal used to make these cans is called tinplate and provides more rust resistance than steel. Hope this info helps! -Christina

A:  Technically yes, as the can is epoxy-lined. But you will find it to be somewhat unwieldy. A one-gallon square (actually rectangular) can is a better choice as it has a small screw-on cap, though you will need a funnel to fill it and availability may be a problem.
