Q:Will this kit work well for heating and loosening rust welded bolts to aid in vehicle repairs in the rustbelt?

Answer This Question

A:  It helps a lot, but is no replacement for acetylene. I?m a retired mechanic who had access to an acetylene rig at work and this is what I now use at home. It is much slower to heat and if the bolt is in something that acts as a heatsink, it may not work.

Q:I will mainly use propane so is there anything to worry about using the map-pro cylinder first and then switching to propane cylinders? Like do I have to clean it first before switching to propane or?

        Answer This Question

A:  Hello, and thank you for your question. Since this torch can be easily interchanged between propane and map/pro fuel, there is nothing specific that needs to be done to use between gases. If you have any additional questions, please email us at Bernzomatic@WorthingtonIndustries.com. Thank you.

A:  Hello, and thank you for your question. The TS8000 torch can be used to perform light brazing. Depending on the melting point of the metals, it may be more beneficial to look into a true brazing torch, such as our model WK5500OX. If you need any additional information or have any more questions, please email us at Bernzomatic@WorthingtonIndustries.com. Thank you.

Q:Can I use this to solder a silver brazing rod for a refrigerator compressor repair? I don't want to buy a whole oxy/acetylene setup if I can avoid it.

              Answer This Question

A:  Here is a little info that may help. The Bernzomatic TS8000KC will heat up to around 2600 degrees F. Silver brazing rods melt in the 1145 to 1650 degree range. So, the torch definitely will get hot enough to melt the rod. The torch tip is not a pencil tip like on oxy/acetylene setup, but has a larger flame area. So, you will have to determine if you can use this torch to do your specific job. As to the torch itself, I LOVE mine. Can't believe that I did not get one years and years ago. If I have a stuck bolt or nut on a metal part (motor, car chassis, etc) it only takes a few seconds for this to heat it up enough for easy removal, just one example.

A:  Its the same gas in your grill (green tanks are propane) yellow tank is Mapp gas that is a hotter flame than propane more like acetylene but if your plan is to heat a pot with food because you lost power your good to go.

A:  Hello, and thank you for your question. After your fuel canister is empty, your canister will need to be disposed of as they are not designed to be refilled. For additional questions, please email us at Bernzomatic@WorthingtonIndustries.com. Thank you.

                  by|Mar 9, 2021

A:  Not legally. It does not have DOT stamps and cannot be transported if you refill (and get caught). Most welding shops will not refill it due to the lack of DOT stamping plus the fact that it is well know that this type of cylinder is meant to be disposable. It's a big fine to refill it and not worth it to them.

A:  Log on to Web site Riogrande.com to learn more on choosing the right torch for your project. And check your nearest metal welding shop to solicit their advice for safety info. Good luck and happy welding.

A:  The type of torch you need depends more on the size of the object that you are trying to solder onto. If the object is larger it will have a larger thermal mass and absorb much of your torch heat not allowing it to heat up to the melting point of the soldering agent quickly. The heat may then transfer a long way damaging other items. If you are able to heat up the base metal faster (higher temp), then you can spend less time on the joint and the heat will not go as far. The base metal then reaches the melting point of your solder sooner. When the object reaches the temp of the (silver) solder melting point, the solder will then flow (you melt the solder with the heat from the object being soldered and not the torch.) That's why the the MAPP gas is better for soldering large copper joints. It will also solder small pipes very quickly. Conversely, if you are soldering large copper pipes with propane, then you will have to spend a lot of time with the flame on the pipe to propagate the heat into the joint. I use the example of the pipe only to illustrate that it depends what size of object you are soldering onto. Propane may be good enough for you. This torch can also use propane if you want. So it may be good to spend a little more on this and have the option of either fuel. It does have a large swirl flame. If you are looking for a pin point type of flame then this is not what you want.

A:  Jon, there was only one tip in this kit. I love my TS8000KC, use it for tons of things. Rusty nuts and bolts, bending metal, pressing on bearings, etc. Wished I had bought one year ago. Bernzomatic makes several different torch kits. Although I don't have one yet, theTS3500T Multi-Use Torch Head seem to have a finer point and may be more in line with what you are looking for. Home Depot has them on their website. good luck with your Bernzomatic.
