The SA-401BH is a spike-type aerator that utilizes our patented 3D tines to penetrate the soil and make openings so that air, water and nutrients can reach the lawn's root systems. A plug type aerator (see the PA-40BH) will do all of this but will also remove a 'plug' of soil to help relieve compaction (common in high clay-content or highly trafficked areas). The pointed star type configuration slices into the ground rather than pulling out plugs.
