Q:Two Questions:
1. Can the lower shelf be placed in a different spot than where it is in the photo?
2. Do these have to be used hanging from the wall? Could they be used as standalone pieces in say an attic (where the sloped ceiling starts at 48" from the floor) and sit on the floor?

A: Yes, but should be done by somebody with experience in such matters. Keep in mind the pieces are vinyl-covered particle board so the vinyl should be cut with a utility knife before sawing the shelf to avoid tearing up the vinyl. Also, the hanging rod(s) would need to be cut with a hacksaw/cutoff wheel on a grinder.
