Each tower is going to made up of an individual adjustable shelf.
how wide are the shelves?
The shelves are adjustable and designed to fit closet sizes from 3 ft. to 5 ft. wide. The overall width of the closet system is 60 inches and can be trimmed down to fit a minimum width of 36 inches. The rods and shelves are cut-to-fit, allowing for customization to your specific closet space.

We recommend 1lb per inch.
Can you only use one of the rods for longer items instead of both rods? Does this compromise the system?
As long as you have a fixed shelf or rod you should be ok.

Would it be possible to rip all of the boards to 12" deep without compromising anything? Our closet is narrow and cannot handle shelves or any unit deeper than 12" (our current unit is 12" deep and we would bump into it if 14" deep).
The product depth is 14 inches. While the shelves and vertical panels are made of durable laminate, modifying them by ripping them down to 12" is not recommended.
