Q:The instructions say do not drill a pilot hole, however with a regular drill the screw does not go into the stud. This makes me wonder if you must apply pressure or force on the drill when installing these screws or would it require a special type of drill. Please advise on how to get these screws in. I am one step away from returning this system.

A:  Not sure, it handle a 38lb microwave quite easily.

by|Feb 25, 2020

A:  You want to make pilot holes if the wood is that hard.. use a bit that is at least slightly smaller than the center shaft of the screw.. when you put the bit behind the screw to look at it, the shaft of the screw should be all you see.. if you can see the bit behind the screw, use a smaller one. I forget which bit I used now but I practiced on a spare piece of 2x4 to see which would allow me to screw the screw all the way in without stopping me, yet without being too easy to screw in either.

A:  I did not use a kit and had my own screws. I purchased separate parts for my particular needs. Any standard drill is fine, as long as you use the recommended drill bit. Do not use an impact drill, however, especially if you will secure anything into drywall instead of studs.

    by|May 12, 2020

A:  An impact driver would work best, But regular drill can do the job if you coat the threads of the screw with wax or even a bar of soap to make it slide in easier. The main issue is to not strip the head of the screw before it is tight to the wall. So push hard on the regular drill to keep it from jumping, then stripping the head.

A:  Yes, I needed a 38 long HangTrack and cut it to fit. You have to plan ahead on which end to cut so the pre-drilled holes fit your studs and the cut end doesn't show.

A:  I think Home Depot will cut it for you. You can cut them with a chip saw also. If you don't have a chop saw you could use a circular saw, but make sure you secure the track before trying to cut. A hack saw will also work, but takes a while.

          by|Aug 29, 2016

A:  Yes it can be cut down to size. You will have to contact your local THD for cutting services but you can use a hack saw to cut it yourself if you chose to.

          by|May 4, 2023

A:  It can be cut to piece with a hack saw or any other blade that can cut light metal. I used a circular saw with a metal blade and it cut it like butter, but that might be more than most people have easy access to. As for whether Home depot will cut it, I can't say for sure. When I used to work there I would have done it for you, and I know they have the ability, but it may depend on the store.

A:  Yes, a 40' hang track can be cut to a 30' hang track. No, homedepot does not cut it. You have to cut it yourself, using a hand saw, make sure you get a blade for cutting metal. But, if you have a bandsaw it would be quicker. Homedepot carrys' them. I had to do it, by hand first, but later got a bandsaw.

Q:I am thinking of securing the hang track at the top of the wall. With a 1 1/2" top plate - 1/2" drywall - 5/8" distance from the top of the track to the center of the hole only leaves 3/8" of the bottom of the 2 x 4 top plate. I don't want to use nails and want to use screws. What size and length screw and should every hole in the track be used. I'm also doing it this way because there is a pocket door in this wall.

A:  #12 x 2" pan head screws are what is recommended and what I used.. here are the directions http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/ca/cafc8d51-5807-4dd6-877e-c91330ce4e9a.pdf But your concern was what I initially was thinking, that the top 2x4 would be too close to the actual ceiling to properly secure the Track in the center of it.. but it wasn't the case. Use a drill and one of your smallest bits to find the bottom edge of your top 2x4.. it's likely not flush with the ceiling.. when builders frame walls they typically do so before raising it.. in order to raise it and not hit the ceiling, they make it just short of the ceiling height.. I couldn't figure out why our wall had a half inch gap between the top 2x4 and the ceiling until I saw our builder during a remodel put up a wall.. The ceiling isn't what holds up the frame anyhow so they leave a gap which allows for the raising of the wall without the ceiling preventing it... the gap is then covered by the drywall people.. But you mention 5/8" between top of the Track and the center of the hole.. which is true.. which would only leave 3/8" of the bottom of the 2x4... but that only equals an inch.. the 2x4 gives you 1.5" of wood to deal with.. so even if it is at the top touching the ceiling.. the hole would be 5/8" from the top of the wood.. which would leave 7/8" from the bottom to the center of the hole.. plenty of room.. But I almost guarantee your top 2/4 is slightly below the ceiling.. if you test drill to find it, i'm sure that's what you'll notice.. then mark where the center of the 2x4 is and plan to drill your Track there.. it doesn't have to be flush with the ceiling.. better to sit in the center of the actual 2x4 for the most support. Feel free to ask if you have more help.. if you ask another question it will go to my email and i'll try and help.

A:  Locate the mounting holes to be in the center of the top 2x4. if you expected load on this is going to be very heavy say around 300lbs then use each hole. Use a #12 by 2" Screw and also I did drywall anchors on the section of rails hanging on this track for extra support. It mainly keeps the uprights plumb an tight to the wall.

A:  Screws are what you need to hang them and the length is always thickest of dry wall ans track with enough of the screw to get a good bite i would like 3/4 of inch or more if possible to secure them good. I think I understand your problem as the wall you want to hang it on has pocket door which I think means there are no up and down studs to use and you only have an upper 2 x 4 to secure to, not sure if your have enough wood to hold up these tracks unless you are not putting much weight on the unit. You might want to check out some of the new molly set ups they use for hanging mirrors as they may support more weight if needed. Not sure if that helps. And by the way you usually don't need to use every screw hole, they have the holes to as studs are sometimes 16 inch centers and some walls have 24 inch centers again the amount of weight you plan to put on unit comes into play.

              by|May 3, 2023

A:  At least a #8 x 1 1/2" screw. #10 would be better. Depending on the weight of what is going on the shelf will depend on the number of screws you'll need. This bracket holds the majority of shelf weight. The vertical drops only hold with one screw to level out. Use your own discretion for amount of screws, if you doubt it use all 5. Hope this helps!?

A:  I believe it only comes in 80" or 40", but I've used a chop saw to cut before. I flipped it over with the back up. You could also use a hack saw to cut it also. They may even be able to cut it in the store. Hope this helps.

                A:  Only 24, 40 or 80.

                by|Jan 15, 2020

A:  No, they only have 24", 40" and 80". Depending on your setup there are a few combinations that you can work with.. such as two 24" tracks placed with outer edges 60" apart. Then you would put one of the hanging standards between them secured only to the wall.. if there's a stud there all the better. As you're figuring which combination to use, keep in mind the hanging standards need to be at least 4" from the end of the track.

                by|May 3, 2023

A:  It is only available in 40" and 80" lengths. You can cut them down to a size small.

                  Answer This Question

A:  No, 80" is the longest one. If you need longer than that you would take two of the 40" tracks (Model # 2826) and hang them level with each other so they extend to 96". Just make sure when you hang the standards that they're at least 4" from the end of each track and not right where they join in the center. If you can work it so there is a stud between the two tracks you could extend each track out so they sit at the 96" mark on each side.. then just put a standard bolted to the stud between the two tracks (it wouldn't hang on the tracks, the stud would hold it up. Or another way is to put standards on studs on either end of the overlap so the shelves don't hang off the tracks too far. But there are a number of options given your setup with the three sizes of tracks (80", 40", and 24").

                    Answer This Question

A:  your question is not clear enough to answer as it all depends on quite a few things' are they installed in studs or wall anchors as you must be using a least 2 maybe 3 or 4 of them depending on shelf length. It also depends on screws used to anchor them to wall ' how long they are and how much goes into stud and kind of screw used to anchor it. to much detail missing to give you any idea but best from my side would be if 2 1/2 inch to 3 inch screws used in studs not dry wall screws either and 2 per unit used it should support about 50 pounds safely.

                    by|May 3, 2023

A:  This question cannot be accurately answered without more information. Weight capacity depends on a few different variables like the type of shelving you are using, how many brackets and standards you are using and the type of installation as well.

                    by|May 3, 2023

A:  It all depends on how you install it. If you are installing it with the recommended hardware and follow the instructions to the letter, it should hold a couple of hundred pounds easy. I know this because when I installed mine I put all my weight on it (over 250 lbs.) and it held strong.

A:  If you have a Dremmel you can do it yourself but they have cutting tools at the store to cut things like this.. you would have to cut it at both ends 4" on each.. that would leave you 3 holes to hang it with and 4" extra on each side..

A:  Yes they can be cut to fit! I would recommend that you cut it so you have the mounting holes as close to each end this way you can support it evenly balanced. You want to put the screw through the holes in to the top plate 2x4 of the wall this way all the weight on the shelving system will be held up by the structure of the wall, then use the uprights holes to just hold the racks secure to the drywall.

I greatly enjoy it for this will let you hang several uprights from the frame of the wall an then put shelves up where you want, not where they are made via standard shelving.
