Q:How far apart are the holes? Will HD Cut to size?

Answer This Question

A:  No sure, but it was definitely not 16 on center. If your closet is not too high you can attach to the top plate and the studs will not matter.

by|May 5, 2023

A:  8" and I am not sure if they will cut this, depends on the store and workers

    by|Jan 15, 2020

A:  Center to center of each hole is 8 inches. You will have to reach out to your local store to ask if they will cut it to size for you.

    by|May 3, 2023

A:  Holes are on 8" centers so every other one can be in a stud on 16" centers.

A:  I did not use toggle bolts, but if you choose to use them you can get toggle bolts from HD that will hold up to 100lbs. However if you are attaching it to an out side wall use the plastic type of dry wall anchor. It will hold up to 75 lbs. The reason is because outside walls often have insulation in them. I ran into this problem when I was hanging my speaker stands and had to switch. The insulation will stop the toggle bolt from moving into the correct position.

            Answer This Question

A:  I'm not the expert here, but I think a pilot hole into the metal beam/joist would guide the screw in and be stable just like that.

A:  If you scroll down to the INFO & GUIDES section and click on INSTRUCTIONS / ASSEMBLY that document will show you what hardware you need depending on what wall surface you will be mounting to. To find them online you can search Model # 2876, Model # 2877 or Model # 23587.

Q:I do NOT want to slide things around. I do NOT want wire shelves. What I am planning is to screw the standards directly into the studs in a garage wall. It seems obvious that the screws holding the standards to the wall take the load. In an answer here you say that the rail is what takes the major part of the load. How is that possible? It would only add one more screw to hold the standard. That seems insignificant. I can't really tell (as you provide almost NO technical information -- I'll probably have to go to the store with a tape measure and calipers to get the info I need), but maybe you are assuming that I'll screw the rail into the top plate? That won't work as I am not starting my shelving at the TOP. To do so would require that I buy longer standards than I need. My first shelf is going to be 24 inches down from the top plate so that is where the rail would be, if I had one, and therefore it would not screw into anything more than the stud. Since I am going no lower that 24 inches, I only require a 48" standard. Am I not understanding the concept here? Thanks for any info you can offer.

A:  The top rail does provide the most hold on the load.. it screws into the horizontal support beam near the ceiling and the standards hang from it.. you screw the standards into the wall to keep them in place but it's the top rail that holds everything.. think of how a picture hook is put int he wall and then the picture hangs down on the wall.. I believe the instructions state that you can use only the standards but you have to make sure you anchor them only to studs.. if you have them in studs you won't need the top rail. The directions specify the size bolts you will need.

A:  The top rail does take the load of the weight. If you chose not to use it then we cannot promise any kind of system maximum loading. It does not have to be screwed into the top plate but you will need to anchor it or screw it into studs. Using the hang track will also help keep your standards aligned evenly across.

A:  You can use the rails without the top track. The top track is an extra layer to secure the unit. I agree that the rail (bracket holder) is the primary method for securing the unit.

A:  If you are looking at the track from the side the over hanging lip should be on top so it will look like an upside down J if that makes sense. But I would go to the the INFO & GUIDES section you can see how to set it up with the instruction guide that is there.

A:  If you have it on hand you'll be able to tell because they only hook on one way.. but looking at the picture above, it has the top part facing up.. the top of the standard sits beneath that lip on the top.. and hangs on the lower part..

                        Answer This Question

A:  YES. You can screw the bracket to the bottom of the melamine shelves. It is not as rigid as standard shelves nailed to a frame for example, as the brackets themselves sway slightly from side to side when hanging from the vertical track bracket. However, wire shelves sway the same so nothing worse there. See attached picture.

A:  NO, as the tracks would not fit within each other. Yes you could stagger them vertically but that would look awful in my opinion.. I suggest you have the Home Depot sales associate cut the tracks to length you need..

A:  Yes, you can overlap the top tracks. I did this in my laundry room. To mask the overlapping horizontal tracks, I made sure that the holes on vertical tracks aligned despite being attached to overlapping horizontal tracks. The alignment of holes on the vertical tracks determined how much vertical space was between the two overlapping tracks (I used nails to temporarily hold the vertical tracks in place while I marked where overlapping tracks would go). I then placed a shelf below the overlapping tracks. When baskets or bins are on the shelf, the overlapping tracks cannot be seen. I have attached pictures of the tracks with and without bins on the shelf. Happy hanging!

A:  The labels on the shelf brackets tell you the weight rating. It depends how long they are (how deep your sheles are), which you didn't mention. "Brackets" that you mention are not what I'm talking about.

A:  PER CLOSETMAID: The 80" Hang Track must be mounted in studs or concrete using specified hardware and has a weight limit of 1900 pounds. Maximum Load ShelfTrack also comes in 4' shelves that are able to support 400 pounds each. These can be mounted on the 80" Hang Track, or the 40" Hang Track. The 40" track can support a maximum of 900 pounds.

A:  If you have the right tools you can cut the metal parts. I think a jig saw with a metal cutting blade would work. Not sure if the store would cut something special like that though. The hang track comes is 3 different lengths though and the vertical rails come in various lengths too. Not all stores have the various sizes in stock though.

A:  Yes, I had to trim mine, it would fit in the closet that I was installing it in. I used a chop saw to speed it up, plus I already had the saw set up. You could probably use a hack saw pretty quick.

A:  Please call your local store for this inquiry, but most people cut down the 80 inch hang track at home. Another option would be to use a combination of the 40 and 24 inch hang tracks to best fit your space. Standards are available in 12, 30, 48, 60, and 84 inches, so cutting shouldn't be necessary.
