Q:How much weight could a 3/4 in. x 2ft x 8ft board hold without breaking?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello, We have conducted testing on a 3 in. x 20 in. sample and it requires 400 lbs. of pressure before it fails/breaks. This is following ASTM D1037-89 standard test with the grain running in the 20 in. direction. Not sure how much weight on a full 2 ft. x 8 ft. panel before it fails.

by|May 4, 2023

A:  the answer is also dependent on the support of the wood. if it has a heavy frame it could support 1000 pounds easily as long as the weight is transferred to the vertical beams being the legs. provided it has its own truss to support it and transfer the weight. since then your looking at the compression failure of the wood.

Q:Can this piece of wood be used to make a kitchen cutting board?

    Answer This Question

A:  Yes you could but I wouldn't recommend it. This plywood is composed of multiple layers, with a thin veneer for the surface layer. Cutting on it would soon penetrate the veneer and expose the next layer, leaving ragged edges.

    by|Mar 18, 2021

    A:  It can be used.

    by|May 3, 2023

A:  Hello, The Maple layer on the plywood is thin - 1/42” thick. Would not recommend the item for use as a cutting board. Intended application is for cabinets, built-ins, etc. Thank you for the interest in our product.

      by|May 3, 2023

A:  it could be used but would need to be sealed and the veneer is only 1/32 thick.

Q:What are the exact dimensions of the 4' x 4' sheet? Is it exactly 48 inches? Or, can I expect a 1/4" reduction due to saw blade? Also, if I were to order many, many of these 4' x 4' sheets, would they all be the same dimensions? Or, is there expected variance in the dimensions? How much variance?

            Answer This Question

A:  I'm not sure what you're asking? This Panel is 24" x 48". This is the dimension this panel is sold at. Anything smaller than this, you would need to cut yourself. You would have no problem cutting this panel down to the size you've mentioned, providing you're using a fine tooth saw blade. When cutting, ensure the side you've selected as the visible side is facing down on your table prior to you cutting it. This will reduce the chance of splintering on the "good" side of your panel...And, take your time cutting, don't rush it as this will increase the chances of splintering.

            by|May 3, 2023

A:  yes the manufacturer can cut that size.

A:  I did use a 1/4 round cutter on my router to soften the edges and it worked fine. Smooth as can be.

A:  Hello R5mom, The edges of the plywood are best trimmed with solid lumber or some type of edge banding. If you would like a small sample to test – contact Kevin at kcrisp@cfpwood.com and we will get you something to test.

A:  I would probably say...No!..You won't have smooth / finished edges from routing an edge in plywood. Plywood is not really designed to product those finished edge results. In attempting to do this, I'm almost certain you'll be disappointed with the results. With that said, this doesn't mean you can't achieve a smooth, finished edge in plywood. Just about every woodworker out there achieves this type of finished edge in plywood by applying a band / trim-piece of wood over the edge of the plywood. In your case, you would simply obtain a trim piece of 1" x 1" or 2" high strip of maple and the length of your edge, and glue and tack it along the edges of your plywood. From there, you can then use your router to produce your edge on that trim piece. That's the way to route an edge in plywood.

A:  It is very well packaged. Heavy cardboard box and then sandwiched between two stiff cardboard sheets. The one I got came with no dings or damage to the edges. I wouldn't hesitate to have one shipped.

A:  Over several months, I've received 3 separate shipments from Columbia Forest Products. Each, and every one of them arrived without any damage whatsoever! Each plywood panel was inside a very strong box. Inside the box, and on each side of the plywood was also a sheet of thick cardboard. Extreme care has been taken by this company to ensure proper, and expected condition when you get it. I am extremely pleased with the care they take in shipping, and the quality of their plywood panels.

A:  The packing is quite good. I found zero damage in 2 separate shipments. The outer corrugated box protects the corners and large, heavy corrugated sheets protect the faces. Nothing is exposed.
