Q:my fire place wall was built with steel panel and bricks in 1941. Over the years the mortar between the steel panel and bricks became cracked. Can this Black High Heat Mortar Sealant is an answer to repair the cracked mortars between the bricks and between metal and bricks?

A: The best course of action will be to remove as much of the loose material as you can. Once the High Heat Mortar as been appiled and it has set, it should seal properly. This product is not UL certified however.
I have used this type of product on the firebrick inside my fireplace with good results.

A: DAP High Heat Mortar is designed primarily for small touch up repairs. For larger and more involved repairs, a dry mix refractory cement may be the better choice. Given the age of the fireplace, a proper inspection by a professional may also be in order.
