Q:Do I need to ground my generator with a grounding rod, driven in the ground, when using it for back-up power with a transfer switch or will my generator be grounded through the ground on the 30 amp round cord or through my main panel box? Also, if I am using the generator for other purposes, besides back-up power for my home, does it have to be grounded?

                      Answer This Question

A:  No. I used my generator during Hurricane Irma last year.. It was located on my back patio with various extension cords hooked up to it. Since then, I had a transfer switch coupled with my outside house circuit breaker panel. All I have to do to power the home is start the generator, turn off circuit breakers not needed, shut off the main power input switch to the circuit breaker panel, and engage the transfer switch. I have three air handlers in my 2 story house, but the generator will only power one of them. Also be advised that the more circuits you use, the faster the gasoline will be consumed in the generator.

A:  No - I double checked instructions and no requirement on the one I bought.

A:  Works for a window air conditioner. I don't have a heat pump, so can't answer that part of the question.

                          by|May 5, 2023

A:  yes to a portable a/c. 30 amps is the max you can power up with the generator. Just remember the more amps it is powering means more gas is consumed by the generator. No to running both of them at the same time.

A:  I bought this generator for my son. He has a well pump and we had the gen wired into a subpanel so he could run the cord from the generator into a plug attached to the outside of the house. The generator runs his well pump, septic alarms, fridge, lights, heat etc with no problem. He has had to use it a few times and it runs great!! I have a friend that's an electrician and he wired it to the subpanel. Make sure to use a professional!! Too much at stake for a Regular Joe to be messin' with electricity!
