Q:Ho well does this seal closed when not in use. Will this keep the cold air from coming in through the vent?

Answer This Question

A:  Mine seals up very well. The small magnetic latch even keeps it closed when the wind blows. The aluminum tubing transmits some cold but it is much better than an all metal vent. For the price, it is a very good vent.

A:  Mine did a decent job of blocking air from coming in. It doesn't block 100% but once connected to dryer you won't notice the slight draft.

A:  If the dryer is not in use it closes completely. It does a great job at keeping the cold air out of our basement and looks very nice.

A:  I recently installed this product on my own house when I was building an addition that required an existing bathroom exhaust duct to be re-routed. It seals better than most similar products. It seems to seal against wind blowing into the duct much better than most similar products. It does allow air to be sucked out of the duct in high winds, but still it is much better than most similar products.

A:  It has 2 doors, the outer door has a tiny magnet and seals the outer part of the vent hole. The inner door plugs the inner part of the vent hole.

A:  Very good product and it will prevent a return of air in the system. Be aware it is not completely sealed but close very well with a slight inclination. I live in Florida, so no experience with the cold weather. I really think there is no problem.

Q:How do I install this vent on brick exterior? Should I stick it to house with caulk? Should I stick on the nail flange? How about a video for stucco and brick exteriors??? Not everyone has siding

A:  No. must be screwed to wall. Vibration from dryer and hose can over time loosen it from wall as calk ages. Install with tap con screws. Drill holes in mortar joints. Their easier to drill in mortar joints and will hold just fine. Do not over tighten.

A:  I'd use sealant behind the flange (top and sides, leave bottom w/out caulk in case water gets behind flange it has a way to escape) and also use screws (tap con screws designed for concrete/masonry) to secure this vent to stucco or brick.

A:  I'd use masonry screws, and screw into the brick and caulk. Do some youtube searches for drilling into masonry. Not really much different than installing to siding. I wouldn't use the nail flange.

A:  I would not use this through brick exterior. It is made to use with vinyl siding.

Q:The video seems to assume this is for a dry vent. Will it work for bathroom vents as well? My concern is whether the vent pushes enough air to open both doors.

A:  Yes, this will work for BOTH barroom vents and drier vents. I used mine for an older pretty low volume fan and was concerned that it would not be able to blow open the flap. It performs just fine. This vent seals exceptionally well when not in use too. The P-tec manufacturers website offers a lot more information.

A:  That depends on a lot of variables. CFM rating of your exhaust fan; Diameter of duct; Type of duct; Number of elbows; Length of run.

A:  Yes, it will work for barrooms. I have an 30 old cheap bathroom fan that I was also concerned about. It works well and pushes the flap open just fine.

A:  Yes this can be used as a bathroom vent as well. I have it on each of my bathrooms and it easily opens the doors which I thought might be an issue as well, but it wasn't!

A:  The j-block comes with a nail flange and a 12" metal tube while the wide mount is just the faceplate. Either of the vents can be used for new or as replacement vents.

A:  This is a 4" diameter exhaust cover for wall-mounted exhaust air. It closes more reliably than the plastic shutter versions which seem to sometimes not have all the leaves of the shutter close. I don't know if there are other sizes available (check with the manufacturer or the store/web site). Mount uses the standard 4" diameter aluminum duct (comes with the cover mechanism). The outside portion is just a little larger area and depth (projection) than the less reliable models. In high wind situations, it seems to stay close reliably whereas the shut models may flutter and let wind enter.

A:  They are both for stand 4" vents. This the J-Block one is made specifically for aluminum or vinyl siding. Although it could be used for any sheet style siding as well. The large square J-block fits under the siding and the face snaps into it. The WIDE vent attaches to the house from the front via some concealable holes. This would be for flat siding or even brick or stucco.
