Q:Can you break these in half and use for 16 inch joists with 14 inch wide area? I prefer the foam over plastic which comes in 14 inch size? Broken in half, the foam is 11 inches, so is it okay to have 1.5 inch space on each side?

Q:Hi. When installing an insulation baffle, is it placed against the ridge directly? Is the same true for the facia board at the soffit? Thank u.

    Answer This Question

A:  Hello AverageHomeowner, Intent of the baffle is to prevent insulation from blocking the air space against the roof deck. The baffle should attach to the top plate to keep air from the soffit infiltrating the insulation. Batt insulation can be used to block the outer edges at the soffit. If this is an attic then the baffles only need to be in place where necessary to keep the insulation out of the ventilation space -typically 1 or 2 baffles. If a cathedral ceiling then the baffle should end about 2” short of the slot cut for the ridge vent. Also, if running multiple baffles up the roof deck, space them about ¾” apart. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  Hello Trillium, We are not aware of any warping complaints with Raft-R-Mate. It is an XPS foam baffle which is a different material than Accuvent. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  I'm not familiar with the Accuvent product but I can say that after 2 yrs. in Florida heat my Raftermates are performing well.

Q:I have a cape log home with a front porch that was added after the house was built. Our roofer put in a vent along the entire porch overhang for airflow. I want to blow insulation into the attic. Do I still need to install these?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hello LenDIY, the Raft-R-Mate is designed to assure unrestricted airflow from the soffit to the ridge vent by providing an air space between the insulation and the roof deck. If there is ventilation and loosefill insulation is being installed it would be recommended to use Raft-R-Mates. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  Hello Lerch, we do not recommend using the Raft-R-Mate Attic Baffle with spray foam. As the spray foam expands it can damage the Raft-R-Mate. Thank you for your inquiry!

A:  Yes. I filled any gaps with spray foam 2 yrs ago with success.

A:  Hello Darinj, for trusses that are 4' oc, two Raft-R-Mates could be used side by side. You will need to verify a 1” depth is sufficient for the length of roof from soffit to ridge. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:My home was built in the late 70's. Attic floor has loose (not blown in ) fiberglass that has settled to maybe an inch below top of the joists. I want to add batts or rolls perpendicular. Is an inch gap between the layers detrimental?

                    Answer This Question

A:  Hello Keith, One inch below joists will not be a concern if you are laying insulation perpendicular. Allow insulation to “settle” down between the joists- do not pull insulation you are adding tight. Thank you for your inquiry!

                      Answer This Question

A:  Hello Kathy, Intent of Raft-R-Mate is to keep insulation out of the ventilation space. Meaning the insulation will at least partially keep the Raft-R-Mate in place. The rest of the Raft-R-Mate may be held by wire ties. Adhesive may not be a great option due to potential for elevated temperatures at the roof deck. Thank you for your inquiry!

Q:My house was built 35 years ago and has rolled out insulation in between the ceiling joists that is blocking the inflow from the soffit vents. Is it feasible to pull back the insulation and install these to prevent the insulation from blocking the air flow? Or is this product only intended for new construction?

                        Answer This Question

A:  Hello Joe, The Raft-R-Mates can be used in retrofit applications also. However, the lower the slope of the roof, the more difficult it will be to get back there and add the Raft-R-Mates. Make sure you use caution, using a piece of OSB to bridge the joist may make it easier and safer. Thank you for your inquiry!
