Q:what is the manufacturers recommended way to apply to horizontal boards? stain pad? sprayer? or brush?
by|Dec 1, 2019

Answer This Question

A:  Stain pad and/or oil based brush are the best method of application for horizontal deck boards. Stain pads attach to a pole and are quick and easy to use. A brush is handy for back-brushing and touch ups.

Q:just curious, if properly applied, does the water bead when rained on?

      Answer This Question

A:  Preserva Wood does not make claims about water beading, although you may see the water bead, especially on recently stained wood. Products that claim water beading use either a wax or a silicone oil to achieve the beading. Those products must be stripped prior to re-application. With Preserva Wood, you simply clean and re-treat. No stripping to re-apply for maintenance.

Q:Can I use an electric paint sprayer for this product ? I know that a roller brush is not recommended and I just don't see myself using a brush for my 250 feet of fence....

        Answer This Question

A:  It turns out to be a sticky mess, so we used a roller, garden sprayer and paint brush then threw all away when we were done!

        by|Apr 15, 2020

A:  Thank you for the inquiry. We generally recommend a pump sprayer or stain brush for fence applications. An airless sprayer may be used as well with the correct spray tip size for an oil-based stain.

Q:How many hours or days after the Preserva Wood is applied may I allow the irrigation sprinklers to go on again?

              Answer This Question

A:  If your daytime temperatures are at least 70 degrees and your humidity is fairly low, then 24 hours is plenty of time for Preserva Wood to cure. If your weather has been cooler, or your humidity is high, then 48 hours should be sufficient.

                Answer This Question

A:  I didn’t and the product worked well on my 2 year old fence.

                by|Nov 5, 2019

A:  You should not add anything to Preserva Wood, including linseed oil. Preserva should be used as it comes in the can. Use mineral spirits to clean brushes and tools. Clean before they dry.

Q:Can I use this product on pressure treated wood? I would like to stain the wood before we put up a fence. We are using 6X6 pressure treated lumber for the posts.

                    Answer This Question

A:  Yes you can, and it will give you added protection. I have 2x4 and 4x4 PT wood that I stained over 10 years ago and it is going strong, holding its color, shedding snow and water, and no splits.

A:  Yes, you can absolutely use Preserva Wood on treated lumber. Our only concern with pressure treated lumber is that it can be wet (high moisture content) if it was recently treated. If your posts are heavy and/or wet, then we would encourage you to allow them to air dry for three or four weeks prior to applying our oil based stain. If the stain is easily and readily absorbed into the wood, then it's ready to stain. As always, remove any excess stain that does not penetrate into the wood.

A:  48 both before and after recommended.

A:  A minimum of 24 hours of dry weather before and after application. Wood should be dry when treated, otherwise the stain will not be able to penetrate properly.

A:  Yes, I believe it will work. I used it on a 6-foot privacy fence almost 2 years ago and my fence still looks like new. I would recommend this for any wood.

A:  Preserva Wood will work on any exterior wood, as long as it is able to penetrate into the wood. If you have any previous coatings on the wood, they should be removed, especially if they are water based, or any type of surface coating. Please read all instructions on the can and feel free to call us on our toll free number for advice if you need it.

A:  Yes it will work well as long as the wood is prepared properly. I loved the color and used it on my new redwood deck in the mountains at 7,000 feet. I would suggest spraying it if doing big surfaces.

A:  I applied this last fall to fencing using an airless sprayer and it penetrated well. It has survived the winter into spring with good color retention and still repels water. In a sunny dry climate such as mine, the real test is often the summer with oxidizing heat and drying. The next test is time. If I can get 5 years before it's time to refresh I will buy the product again. Otherwise, I will use a BLO mix of my own. Good luck.

A:  Theoretically, yes. This product is designed for wood that is sufficiently absorbent. The manufacturer advertises Preserva Wood for decks and fences. Since a log home is not one of those two things, I would consult both the manufacturer of this product and a specialist in log home sealants before committing.

A:  Preserva Wood penetrating oil based stain and sealer will work on any wood that is able to soak in the stain. Douglas Fir, Pine, Redwood, and Cedar are all typical species that can be stained with Preserva Wood. To test for porosity, simply sprinkle a little water on the wood to make sure it soaks in quickly and easily. If the drops of water soak into the wood, the stain will as well!
