A:  There is a small notch on the HE-VAN (High Efficiency Variable Arc Nozzle) that I use with these sprinkler. That tells you where the spray begins. You and grab the shaft and turn it to where the spray aligns with your yard edge. The VAN nozzle can then be adjusted to whatever arc you need the spray to cover. You can also pull the shaft (I've used needle nose pliers) to adjust without turning on the water. Just be careful, these are plastic parts and too much pressure on the pliers might damage them. Good unit overall.

A:  The pattern cannot be adjusted on this item, as it is fixed at 360 degrees. If you are looking for this item with an adjustable pattern it is Rain Bird model 1803APPRS. To adjust the pattern on it you turn the dial on the nozzle.
