Q:I want to spray this on my Honda's subframe. I read something about not using it on Galvanized metal. Are subframes usually galvanized? Also after it has been applied for x24hrs, can I use a rust prevention coating all over it like the Amsoil HD metal pro

Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out! Galvanized metal will typically not have a solid color to the metal and will look like it has a textured. Since Rust-Oleum Automotive Rust Reformer Spray is oil-based, it can peel from this type of surface over time. Please keep in mind, this product is intended for use over rusted metal surfaces. If the area is rusted, then any galvanization from the area will also no longer be there. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:I didn't see this stuff soon enough. I started using Rust-oleum 2 in 1 primer on my "surface rust only" truck bed. It is not body rot or "cancer" so this stuff would have worked great. Can this go over the primer or do I need to remove the primer first?

    Answer This Question

A:  Thanks for asking! The Rust-Oleum Automotive Rust Reformer Spray needs to be applied directly to a heavily rusted area in order to dry and perform properly. If applying this product is preferable, then we would recommend removing the original primer first. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  It is a good primer/sealer for any surface, it just has the ability to "lock or seal" any existing rust and keep it from advancing. I've used it on light to moderately rusted surfaces. just remove any loose material and as much rust/dust as you can. You can paint over it too.

A:  Glad to lend a hand, Willie. Immersion in water is a very aggressive environment for paints, including Rust-Oleum Automotive Rust Reformer Spray. Most of our paints are not intended to be underwater and may peel, blister or show rust (on metal) in a very short time. Especially inside a dishwasher combined with the heat and the moisture will cause the paint to come off quickly. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  I've had overspray on painted areas of a car and it did not harm it. It's a primer that makes rust inert, so when you repaint over the primer with the regular paint the overspray will disappear under the new paint top coat.

                            by|Mar 17, 2021

A:  First and foremost, you must recognizes that this product is a paint, and its over-spray is just as detrimental as over-spray from any other paint. Adequate and secure masking is the best protection against over-spray. Removing over-spray is a delicate procedure. Once it is dry (wet over-spray is even harder to deal with), start with a mild soap solution that you have tested to make sure it will not harm the painted surface you are trying to clean. Continue to use stronger cleaning and/or chemical solutions (i.e. paint thinner) until the over-spray is removed. KEEP in mind that you may not be able to successfully remove the over-spray and repainting the affected surface may be your only option. SO stay on the safe side and mask any area you do not want over-spray to contaminate. AND remember that some over-spray, depending on conditions, can stay wet for a few feet before air-drying enough to not affect surrounding surfaces. Hope you project goes well!

A:  We like how you think, Tuck! If you get overspray with the Rust-Oleum Automotive Rust Reformer Spray, it is best to clean it up immediately before it dries. You can wipe with mineral spirits to remove that without harming the original paint. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  Any coating should be removed prior to welding. A clean edge is necessary to get a good weld.

A:  To the best of my knowledge this Isn’t a weld through primer. They make specific primers just for that application. After welding yes but before your going to end up with a contaminated and poor weld.

A:  Yes but I would wire wheel off any paint in the area to be welded so as not to contaminate the actual weld as part of regular surface prep for welding.

A:  I have used this product on non-pressurized steel pipe. I would make very sure all loose and scaly rust is removed, then inspect the pipe for ANY signs of fatigue or failure of the pipe before painting. It would be a good idea to have your gas supplier (NWGAS?) also inspect the pipe before painting.

A:  Just bring it back to the store for a credit. You will NOT need a receipt even after a year. Just let them know that the cans will not spray...ie. defective.

A:  This will work fine on black pipe but you will still need to clean and prepare the surface thoroughly to get the best results. That being said when it comes to preventing rust, just about anything you coat the metal with is better then nothing on it. This product works very well on bare metal but I would still advise either a metal etching compound or a self etching primer then a coat of this. Painting is like welding as where the saying “Cleanliness is Godliness “ applies. The more work you put into the preparation the better the end results will be and improve the longevity of all your hard work.
