A:  Ice melt is very harsh on equipment. This spreader is not designed for use of ice melt and it would likely severely decrease the life of the spreader. Additionally, I would not describe this tool as ergonomic. As a 5'10" Male the handle height on this unit was too short and uncomfortable. This caused me back pain and I opted to purchase a much more expensive Agri-Fab fertilizer spreader. For ice melt I believe Chapin makes a decent spreader, although I cannot speak to the use or ergonomics of that unit.

A:  I've never used it for this application living in a more southern region but I would think it would work well.

A:  I have a torn patella tendon, an issue with my lower back, & a torn rotator cuff right now. Due to these crazy times, I can't get surgery for anything, so I bought this spreader for my yard. A:  Doing your own calibration would take a lot of effort. Thankfully, most products include a Scotts broadcast spreader setting, and you should be able to trust that the spreader has been correctly pre-calibrated.

A:  The last Scotts spreader I bought finally rusted out. It was 40 years old. My experience with these spreaders is they don't need parts if they work when you get them. If it doesn't work properly take it back to Home Depot or other reputable store for your money back or an exchange.

A:  It depends on how fast you are walking. Slow it will only be about 3-4 feet and if you are walking faster the wider the spread will be. Up to 6 or 7 feet total width. It basically depends how fast the wheels are turning.

A:  This spreader spreads grass fertilizer a width of approximately 4' to 5' swatch with a normal walking pace, but the spread depends on the settings used and also the speed which a person walks. Using other products beside grass fertilizer pellet form such as powder base material will of course affects spread width.

A:  Scotts says you should make each pass 5 feet from the last one, which suggests that it spreads 2 1/2 to 3 feet ti either side.

A:  Tom, I would estimate 5-6 feet. My suggestion to you is contact Scotts directly! The support staff for their products are knowable and helpful. They even told me how to check the calibration on my spreader.

A:  I believe it comes assembled. Be sure to check settings on bag so it matches setting on spreader before using it. I only use this spreader if I need to put down weed killer, because that has to be applied when the lawn is wet from morning dew. I like my scotts drop spreader best for just applying dry fertilizer to the lawn.

A:  I purchased in store. It comes 90% assembled. The handle comes folded down. You simply have to turn two finger tightened bolts.

A:  I think the setting is jus an estimate. I have approximately 12,000 soft. lawn and set mine at 3.5. I usually have some left over and just keep spreading until gone.

A:  There are many variables. Does your crab grass preventer have Nitrogen in it(First number in NPK number)? Looks like PreenOne has 24-0-6, is this what you have?. The 24 means the bag is 24% Nitrogen. If it does have Nitrogen you will want to calculate how many pounds per 1,000 square feet you want to apply. Check out The Lawn Care Nut on YouTube. He has some great videos on how to do the math on how much to apply.

A:  It does seem normal with this spreader. I use way less fertilizer and other stuff in this spreader. I use the recommended setting for the product I'm using. It does seem a little on the light side but seems to work.

A:  Hello Bernie, Maybe there's less waste when you use the Edge Guard on your property as compared to your old spreader. For the spring, and the fall applications I usually kick up my setting .5 because I've experienced the same with what I refer to as expensive "leftovers". You may want to try 5,000 bags just to compare. If stored in a cool dry location, the product will keep until the following spring. Have you tried Milogranite ? I doesn't burn your lawn and is great to use during the warm-hot times of summer. I apply weed deterrent / fertilizer in the spring, fall/winter feed in the fall, and Milo in between. Milo doesn't burn your grass. You'll find Milo it at Home Depot.
